Great post AB and sincere condolences for your loss. Brought a tear to my eye as you expressed exactly the emotions I have about going to football with my Dad, I'm sure many other fans are the same.
I've always loved the way football brings people together and let's hope the team can create more great memories for us at Wembley.

"Ill health and mobiliity issues had meant he could no longer attend games but we chatted after every single game for me to de-brief him on the match, who had played well, who was rubbish, general nonsense really."

^^ this.

Sums up football for me, mostly meaningless yet sometimes everything.

I have printed this thread and will be passing to JM and BM. They can decide whether it it should be passed to the squad.

Rarely has a thread on HNA? been so special IMHO.

The only other recent one being 'Things to do in and around Reading'

Seal Absolutely sums up what football is about for me. Much more than just the game, it's about sharing experiences with friends, family and loved ones.

I'm sure there are many father-son relationships out there where talking about the Reading match is the best communication they ever have. I know for one that's the case for me.

Top post, thank you for sharing and many, many condolences.

Not just father/sons- In our family it's mothers and daughters.
3 generations at Everton made it very special.

What Aubrey wrote has to be sent to the team so that they can read that, after reading it myself it has motivated me to sing my heart out at wembley for this reason.

RIP

My uncle - a Royal since the 30's - passed away at around the time Shane Long put the consolation cracker in at QPR in November.
From being hunched over the same crush barrier on the South Bank week-in, week-out whilst bedecked in a brown car coat and frantically chewing 'givin up the fags' gum during the seventies to an old fella in row H in the middle of the lower west stand, he was integral to me wanting to turn up rain, shine and shite for longer than I care to remember.
Great post and thanks for the memory.

Svlad Cjelli And this is the kind of post that ought to be read by every football club owner and everyone running the game.

A football club is simply a business and should be legislated and administered as one? Bollocks to that!

When did you ever see anyone write with such sincerity about how their dad introduced them to shopping at Tesco or Sainsburys?

A football clubs is so much more than "just a business" to so many people - people who are there before any owner comes along and will still be there long after any owner has left.

Two great posts. This and AB's as the starter of this thread.

Thanks everyone for their kind words. I wasn't especially looking for sympathy per se. Just wanted to share with fellow fans what i was thinking.

Considering i dont (think I) know any of you personally - except Brendy, it was great to read the replies. Good to see so many people relating to it and bothering to reply.

Win or lose at Wembers, I'll be proud of the Team for achieving what they have so far.

One thing i forgot on my original post was the classic thing about "the Chat" we had aftrer the first few games. He said something like: "whatever you see or hear at Football or hear me saying or shouting, don't tell your mother else we won't be allowed to go any more!" Football was "our thing". This was all turned on it's head when many years later he "grassed me " to my mum for my appalling language at a match we attended together. Classic stitch-up!
