Slight advantage to Gladbach following the first play-off but still work to do.

Schalke 5-0 Duisburg for the DFB-Pokal, and in a manner as clinical as the scoreline would tend to suggest

In France, Lille have finished off their double after drawing 2-2 away to the ten men of PSG (and Marseille's home draw with Valenciennes by the same score would have sufficed in the alternative; OM clinched second on the day)

Any one of seven sides will be the third relegated from Ligue 1 when they finish off the campaign on Sunday week, and Monaco are sat 18th on 44 points with a goal-difference of -2 that could prove useful

Trouble for them is they gotta play at home to Lyon, who will be trying to hold onto third and the Champions League qualifying round slot over PSG in fourth 2 points behind them (and a draw should do for OL as PSG play away to St-Étienne); looks like this:

Auxerre 46 +3.........Lorient A
Brest 46 -5............Toulouse H
Nice 46 -14............Valenciennes A
Valenciennes 45 +3...Nice H
Caen 45 -5.............Marseille H
Nancy 45 -9............Lens H
=============================
Monaco 44 -2..........Lyon H

Monaco and that Valenciennes-Nice matchup excepted, none of the relegation-threatened sides' opposition will have anything to play for on the day

Deportivo oh dear, down on the last day in Spain after dropping an 0-2 decision at the Riazor to Valencia (who tacked on their second with the final kick of the match)

Zaragoza get the win that they all but needed, 1-2 away to give-a-oxf*rd Levante and vault from 18th to 13th (and with Depor losing, a cheeky draw would have done for Zaragoza)

As it played out on the nite, Mallorca would have gone down if Depor could have converted one of their several gilt-edged chances and taken a point from a match in which Valencia deftly opened the scoring on 4'

Y'gotta feel for Depor, going down on 43 points and having been in the bottom three after just 7 rounds all season, only twice over the last four rounds and now for the first time since after Round 34 --maximum heartbreak in Galicia

Whoppers for all as Getafe take a point home from their final day showdown away to Real Sociedad, and of course those two are safe with Depor failing to win and Mallorca losing

If Monaco were to be relegated next Sunday, then that'd be both of the sides beaten by Porto in the final two rounds of the 2003-4 Champions League sent down seven years on :|

German play-offs.

Dresden win 3-1 away in the play-off to make it into the second league. Although their fans have a terrible reputation (and now St Pauli have to go there and to Rostock), I am not unhappy about it. New stadium in a great town to go out in, away games with Greuther Fürth for 2011/2012 just got more interesting.

Yes. I wasn't sure, but the online minute-by-minutes are saying Bochum have to score twice now to go up.

Yup thought so

This one's gotta be in the bag --Bochum have had four shots and not a one of 'em on frame and drew level on aggregate from an ownie

Since the first half-hour was up, it's looked like it was only a matter 'Gladbach finishing off one of their many chances

Latest news for the Nacompetitie:

All rounds except the final have been played, the teams have been whittled down to the following fixtures which act as the final - the winners of the two games play in the Eredivisie for 2011/2012;

FC Zwolle v VVV-Venlo
Helmond Sport v Excelsior

Bote competing Eredivisie clubs have made it this far, but it remains to be seen if they can maintain their top division status.

For the European playoffs in the Eredivisie, ADO Den Haag look like they have nailed the last spot after giving FC Groningen a 5-1 tonking in the first leg of the playoff final. The second leg is on Sunday.

I admit, I've had to google to find out where Spakenburg is.

IJsselmeervogels are in for Almere then? A shame to see them go, I always fancied a trip to the Mitsubishi Forklift Stadion*

Monaco relegated from Ligue 1 after losing 2 0 at home to Lyon. about 6 teams were in the mix to go down on the last day but Monaco's defeat meant all the other results were irrelavant. Relegated with 44  points

Well, a little extra research shows that despite IJsselmeervogels won the playoff competition 4-0 on aggregate against FC Oss, they have declined the opportunity to be promoted :| !! Given that the Topklasse is an amateur competition it seemed obvious and logical to me that any team that wins an amateur league competition to get promoted to a professional league would just automatically want it, but it seems that IJsselmeervogels (who won the playoff competition against FC Oss 4-0 on aggregate thanks to two 2-0 wins) don't want it and therefore haven't applied for it. In fact, only three teams have expressed an interest in getting promoted from the 32 clubs in the division. This leaves FC Oss open to take the promotion place instead which they have duly done, they being an relegated Eerste Divisie club during 09/10 they were evidently keen to regain the professional status.

This is the first season of the Topklasse so it will take a number of seasons to bed in completely, this season saw a number of issues in the league including the complete withdrawal of Dijkse Boys from the Sunday League due to financial problems. It has a strange concept, featuring a Saturday and a Sunday league, in the format of the previous 3rd tier incumbent, the Hoofdklasse (which is now the fourth tier). The drawing up of the division wasn't seamless either. The bankruptcy of HFC Haarlem left only one relegation spot from the Eerste Divisie as opposed to the proposed two, so that Topklasse space was filled with an extra team from the Hoofdklasse decided by an extra playoff competition between the losers of the initial Hoofdklasse playoffs. Eerste Divisie's bottom club, FC Oss, nearly kept their Eerste Divisie status due to the bankruptcy of BV Veendam, however the latter bankruptcy was reversed in the Dutch courts so FC Oss were duly relegated.

Bizarre :|

Handbags - I did some wikiing on Spakenburg last night and it's a really small place, maybe the powers that be there felt that professional football was unsustainable there.

Play off final in Spain tonight between Granada & Elche to see who gets promotion to the top tier.

Granada have spent most of the last 35 years moving between the 2nd and 3rd tier and 6 years ago were in the 4th tier

Elche not been in the top division since the late 80's.

I have been trying to find that out myself, tbh. I suspect it will have to be this week sometime. The second division starts in mid-July this year!
