tomrfcurz Interesting read... Madejski confirming Long is leaving and Celtic look to have to pay £4mil for him. Naturally i'm gutted he'll be off but what a profit!

Svlad Cjelli Don't think it's any surprise that he'll be off - and does anyone really begrudge him the chance to play at the highest level at this stag in his career?

Indeed, I guess that won't be the last "Please will everyone bid for Long" interview/article we'll see from Mr Mad.

True - of course, the downside of having release clauses is that we won't have a bidding war for him.

Anyone who bids £4M can have him, so if there are multiple buyers it'll be his choice where he goes, based on personal terms and prospects, rather than our choice to the highest bidder.

Not at all. SPL though is a sideways step.

gazzer, loyal royal the guy has a release clause in his contract letting him go if we didn't go up for £5m, maybe a little more, I can't remember the exact figure.

He looked devastated at the final whistle. Hopefully he'll sign a new deal on same terms for next year and we'll build around him

Can't see us rebuilding around him as i do not think he will stay!

At the moment that looks like a terrible choice, but then I'd have said the same about Shane Long a year ago ... so who knows.

I don't begrudge Shane the chance to play in the Premiership, but RFC stuck by him for 6 years and he's given us 1 good season IMHO.

Where would he be now if the club hadn't stuck by him?
I still feel he owes us, but unfortunately football doesn't work like that anymore.

All the best Shane.

I may be being obtuse but where does it say in the article that 4m is the price? Madejski mentions 20 million.

But he knows he won't get it. The title of the article and this caption "Long game: Shane Long will cost Celtic £4m" is where i got the £4mil price tag from. Madejski is a sensible man, i'm sure of that, and he knows £20mil is stupid - £4mil is a good value and a nice, in fact brilliant, profit on him.

Says in the Sun that Madejski has said it will cost Celtic £20m to sign Long

I would take £8m-£10m

I'll be disappointed if there's a clause that will allow him to go to whoever he chooses for £4m and that (effectively) the buyer won't need to pay any more than that. If it was done like that as part of a deal that made sense to the club at the time then fair enough but I think in an open market he could fetch circa £7m.

I am afraid we may as well look at the reality happening, you never know he may come good :|

Think we will accept offer of £5m for Long as a minimum

There is a fair bit of talk up this end of Scotland that the Long deal is well advanced, also that it might be a player + cash arrangement with Anthony Stokes coming to us.

Would be well happy with that to be completely honest. I had a chat with someone earlier (fairly reliable) saying they believed if Celtic were involved that a player exchange would be on the cards as they didn't want to be paying circa £5mil for someone unproven at a 'high' level

LOL

I thought the standard requirment for a SPL player was not to have made it at a high level.

Personally I think Shane would be wasted in Scotland, far too good a player to be wasted in that Monkey Tennis League.

Scottish Football = DUMP

+ 1

Completely agree. If then release clause is only £4m, then the club will be selling under his actual value and will have sold themselves a little short.
