Avon Royal It's a pity that some people on this thread don't put as much energy into supporting the team as they do into defending their right to sit in silence.

The posts that have been the most sensible are not those defending the right to be silent but the responsibility of thinking of others - so those who insisted on standing despite requests to sit some of the time and those who asked Radidbee to sit when he was only standing at exciting times are both intolerant.

I constantly have this arguement with my mother who goes to every away game but cannot physically stand all game and takes too long to stand up that when all around her stand the action is over by the time she gets to her feet. At Liverpool she was suffering with a cracked pelvis but still went despite the snow and now comments that at least it was on the box to be recorded so she could see the bits she missed (the best action of course). She tries to get a seat where it won't matter but it is not always easy. She first went to see Reading in the 1940s so I think she can out loyal some of the swearers but she needs to allow some standing just as the standers should allow her to see some of the game.

This sums up my views quite nicely. You have to be pretty ignorant to totally disregard the needs of the old and the young who, simply, will not see the game if people stand up throughout.

My dad's been going since the sixties but can't stand up for 90 minutes and i've been taking my children since they were 5. Neither have a hope of seeing much if everyone stands up and they have as much right to be there as anyone else. To be told 'it's football, if you don't like it f**k off' isn't good enough really.

Saying that, I can understand regular fans being hacked off that their experience is being compromised by people who only go to the big occassions and insist on everyone watching on their terms.

No real solutions, the best you can do is try and buy a seat that is most likely to suit your requirements. For Monday, I went upper tier as it's steeply banked and I thought most people would stand in the lower tier. At other times, with the children, I've tried to get tickets near the front so there are fewer potential standers in front of us. Likewise, the standers should try, where possible, to book seats at the back where standing won't impede others view. It's a shame the club can't offer this as a solution but, presumably, it would be seen as condoning standing which is, technically, not permitted.

I have to say, however, it is extremely irritating to have 3 standers near the front where everyone else is happy sitting and their not giving a toss about the thoughts of the majority whose view they are ruining for their own gratification.

Nothing worse than someone in front of you standing, particularly a steward who tells you no to stand when all you can see is the back of their yellow jacket.

Good post Schards.

I stood when everyone was standing - then I watched the people eventually sit down from the front row, which filtered all the way back to us (apart from Royalblue, who aggravated a few people). I sat down, even though I would have liked to stand up all the way through, as I knew I had a family sat behind me (all of whom were singing and making noise) which had 2 kids, and I would have definitely blocked their views .

I guess it's all down to how considerate you are of your surrounding people!!! Obviously some are much, much less considerate than others on here!!

But at the end of this I think that if the whole stand is standing then fair enough - every one has to stand. But if only a couple of people are standing, then these people are instigating hassle - not atmosphere

Schards spot on and no probs in 547 other than stewards wanting swearing stamped out which is fair enough.

There were four blokes sat in front of us aged around mid 20's to 30s. They were sat the whole time, didn't sing, didn't even notice them get excited after we'd scored (though I wasn't really looking at them) - they did, however, keep turning round when I was singing and shouting encouragement. If we ever get to Wembley again, may I suggest that all these non-die hard RFC "fans" get their seats at the back of the upper tiers. Cheers then.

I joined 7 years ago so a posting every 3.5 years is normal for me. No I am not Red but thanks for the compliment on my user name.

I'm looking forward to next season and maybe another trip to Wembley, who knows?

Same for me here. I think I actually apologised in advanced to those around me when I arrived - particularly because of the two tiny kids behind me. Don't think I was too bad. I'm pretty foul-mouthed anyway, so I imagine my language was fairly civilised.

I don't really get the whole some people can't physically stand up etc etc.

Surely if you had a problem which prevented you from standing you would be eligible to get seats in the disabled section?

If that were true stadia would require thousands more disabled seats. They have way too few already, but there's lots of difference between having trouble standing for long periods of time and being eligible as "disabled".

Are you as sympathetic to people in "real life". Imagine that you're, say, 76 years old, in fairly good health, but find standing for long periods of time painful. Do you think you should be classed as disabled? Or do you think that, maybe, you'd like to sit for the game? God help you when you're older.

They can stand up

Not quickly

Think of your grandparents

You'll also know sooner than you think...

But the other side of the coin is that for many people the bobbing up and down every few minutes is the worst possible situation.

But that's what the current regulations, where standing "at times of excitement" is allowed and it's only "persistent standing" that's not are utterly ludicrous.

As pointed out a few pages back, every single argument here supports safe-standing areas, where those who want to stand and those who want to sit are in separate areas and everyone is happy.
