Its about shane long and the intrest of celtic, liverpool.newcastle and everton. And john madejski saying there isnt much he can do apart from get as much as he can for him

Reading chairman Sir John Madejski has told Premier League suitors to put their money where their mouth is if they want star striker Shane Long.

Long is Royals’ most prized asset and Madejski will be looking to bank at least £4million for the 24-year-old, who has bagged 25 goals this season.

Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle United have all watched Long, while Celtic boss Neil Lennon has seen him play in his last three games.

“I’m aware of Celtic’s interest in Shane Long,” said Madejski after Reading’s 4-2 Championship play-off final defeat to Swansea City.

“We are still to hear anything official from Celtic, but it’s obvious they are interested. How confident am I we can ward off Celtic’s interest? Not very.

“It’s sad that we didn’t get promoted because Shane would have liked to stay at Reading if we had reached the Premier League. But that has changed because we will be in the Championship.”

Madejski will be keen to start a bidding war over Long to drive up the price and get the best possible return for a player who Royals signed from Cork City for just £30,000 in 2005.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew and Royals chief Brian McDermott are good friends and would have no trouble doing business.

And Pardew has been told he will be able to use the £35million Newcastle pocketed from the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January to strengthen his squad.

Here's a quote from our TW** of a Chairman. The money grabbing Madman.

Madejski said: “This last game, the last throw of the dice, is a defining moment. Obviously there will be people within the club who are very talented and have a desire to move on.

“We just have to live with what we have – and be pragmatic, sensible, grown up and go forward. We’ll be able to bring in new, raw talent to replace old, good talent.”

Basically what he defines as RAW is CHEAP. That is why we are still in the Championship but then he has grabbed the season ticket money so it is no surprise. It really is time that he ****** off.

Pards does owe us. Maybe he'll chuck an extra £5m - £10m in as compensation and an apology for shafting us for West Ham.

Disagree. If we're going to sell him, lets get it sorted fast. McDermott won't want the saga to drag out into the new season as it did with Sigurdsson and others in the past, leaving us rushing to buy players at the last moment.

It might be OK to let it drag out. I seem to remember Sonko scoring some goals in the matches before he was sold. There would still be plenty of time to get a replacment if one is looking down the diverisons.

Don't forget in his interview on the OS in January Hammond said he and McDermott had persuaded the Chairman not to sell Long in January so I would think SJMs agreement to that was conditional on him being sold this summer.

I actually think that Shane could be persuaded to stay another season and even extend his contract so that he wouldn't be on a free next summer but I think the Chairman wants to sell now.

Wait I thought Long was £8k or so and Doyle was £70k for a combined £78k double transfer

Also, correct me if I am wrong but... when we bough out Doyle's transfer fee didn't it also void Shane Long's sell on fee as well? I can't find the article but I thought it did because I laughed at the time.

I don't know why people are getting so Shirley Temple over the fact that the Chairman has said Long will be sold. We always knew that if we didn't get promoted, he'd go. Although why he'd take a massive backwards step and go and play in Scotland is totally beyond me. Might as well go and sign for Sheffield United if he wants to play for a big team in a crap league...

it's not that, it's the fact that he won't be replaced - SJM will just spend £200,000 on some 16 year old kid who won't make it for another 5 years, who's going to score the goals in the short run? all this club cares about is buying and selling players for a profit. they realised they can make huge profits after the likes of Doyle and Sigurdsson so will just rinse and repeat and pocket the profits - stuff the teams performance.

It's not the fact he's said we're selling him.. The world n his dog knew that was always on the cards.

However they were barely back in reading before sjm was whoring players out in the media.
