Sarah Star Good man!

MATT MILLS is set to snub Wolves, Stoke, Blackburn and Swansea and sign a new contract with Reading.

With a sizable release clause I hope. Fail this season and it's as you were with Doyle, Hunt and prolly Long. Off next summer but we'd be quids in. I'd settle for that.

On this basis the following could then apply....

High degree of interest in Reading player
Players agent advises of interested parties
Clubs evaluation over inflated
Player realises valuation not likely to be met
New contract with minimum release clause that is realistic based on player staying put
Agent spreads the word
Player sold if promotion not achieved

Or

Player is happy here
Player doesn't want to go to any of the clubs currently listed as "interested" in him
Player stays until such time as both he and the club agree he should move on.

Or

Player looks at where he'd live in Wolves, Stoke or Blackburn
Player looks at Emma who has decided she's staying around here
Player decides which option appeals to him more

Reading treat their players well. You hear it all the time what a good atmosphere there is around the club and how players are happy here. When the time comes that a player is getting some envious looks from much bigger clubs the club recognise it and because of their good relationship with the player they can agree a new deal which ensures a nice pay rise and a hand shake on 'if we cock up promotion we'll let you go when a club offers this much'. I think it's a great way to do things and it's testiment to Nicky Hammond for his negotiations with the player and his agent, and also a credit to how we treat people at this football club.

Friday's Legacy
Yorkshire Royal Stoke are not interested.

maybe not but they have just lost faye to west ham on a free, so they're recruiting.

Not even on their radar. Too slow.

I'm not overly familiar with Blackburn. I am way too familiar with Wolverhampton and Stoke. I would pick Reading every single time and I am hardly the biggest fan of Reading. Although having recently visited Coventry, perhaps I have been harsh on the old home town.

Wait a moment, according to the Reading Chronicle he's going... to Stoke or Wolves who are prepared to fight to the death.

when was the last player we sold who we didnt get top value for?
its just not how i see the club handling these contracts and clauses.
club and player agree to the release value, and its usually about right imo

that was sidwells decision, not ours
that was litas decision, not ours.
the rest were because they failed to make it here, or were on wages too high so the equation was shifted, making it cost less to get shot.

the massive massive majority were for multi million pound profits, precisely because of the contracts, cluses, and relationship with the club

I know all that but you asked the question and you can dress it up all you like to justify the argument.....

At the end of the day we've gone from a club where we were competing to buy players to a club that now sells it's best talent. Players know this, agents know this and sadly we all know it....you can claim it's for the benefit of the club and it's long term future financially (and to a certain extent I can understand this) and you can also make it sound like it's to the benefit of the players too with the relationship with the club, but try telling that to the paying public if what they see on the pitch starts going t1ts up...

We've got to keep finding jems, nurturing talent in the academy and the production line needs to keep providing to sell on....is that a sustainable model to work to?

Isn't that the norm for most football clubs?

I think that RFC have become very good at it in the past 5 years.

Depends what you mean by 'most' - there are many football clubs and somebody has to buy for you to be able to sell....

I think that RFC have become very good at it in the past 5 years.

My point, is that sustainable to stay in the championship or get promoition?

well the first two were never sold at all, so thats that up the swannee
and how much did cox cost us to buy again?

fair enough- i think its rubbish though. no one wanted our players before 05/06 at least not for an ammount that was worth it.
every clubs a selling club. even Man U had to give in to real for ronalo.
if wed have had million ound players before 05/06 theyd have been sold as soon as someone offered the million for them
