£3m is pretty good money for Mills. Extraordinary that somebody believes his value has increased since he joined from Donny. Fight them for an extra 500k, and for money up front, then sell.

CayeneMatt I just can't see mills being let go. There needs to be some continuity and losing the club captain just sends out the wrong message completely (although ingi was still official club captain last season).

Add that to 3 cb's going leaving barely any cover at the back, and it just makes no sense.

Pearce has been captain under Rodgers, and was captain through the youth set up I think. Plus there's the influential likes of Legs, Jobi, Harte, Griffin & Gunnarsson. Obviously if we were to let Mills go we'd need to bring in a centreback, but it's not like we'd have no emergency cover thanks to Gun & Harte.

Overall I'd like Millsy to stay

But has anyone considered that letting Mills go solves a problem for McDermott?

He could play Harte in the middle with Pearce or Morrison, thus keeping his free-kick and passing skills
and use the money to but a quick, young left-back

Re: Matt Mills offered £30,000 a week?

Ian Royal
Royal Rother The suggestion that we might pay anyone £30k a week right now is laughable.

Even if we'd got promoted I struggle to see us paying anyone £30k a week. That's about 3 times the average Champ wage isn't it? I can just imagine Madejski spitting his rice crispies across the room reading that one.

doyle and hunt were on over 20k a week when they signed their new deals with release clause attached whilst in the championship. 30k is not beyond us in the premier league.

No, it is extraordinary that anyone thinks that he has not developed since arriving here. He is, quite clearly, a top rate Championship CB and that is reflected in the fact that other clubs are looking at him.

He can't help it that some halfwit followers of RFC have a downer on him.

He has something that we like in British football, which is little more than the ability to roll up his sleeves, clench his fists, and look committed. He did this fantastically well in our last few games of the season. Some people call it big match temperament, but it is the kind of thing that Tony Adams had.

However, he is not a fantastic footballer. If you look at the whole of the last two seasons, we have tended to defend more consistently and better when he hasn't played. Also, he hoofs it too much.

I don't want him to leave, becuase it sends out the wrong message to other players who we want to keep, such as MacAnuff and Karacan, but the starting XI wouldn't suffere too much if he did.

TheRouge Wasnt he 2.5?

It was 2million

Probs closer to 2.5m forest had a 2m offer rejected by donny

it was just over £1m up front and the rest based on promotion and add-ons. there is apparently a sell-on clause, not sure at what % though.

pea We've paid a maximum of £1.5 million for him.

A fair chunk was based on promotion.

Found this article...
http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wol ... and-mills/

Reading are ready to offer Mills a bumper contract worth up to £30,000-a-week to entice their captain to stay

Surely not?

Also...

Meanwhile, Wolves are set to unveil an unnamed Championship keeper as their second summer signing to join £5million Jamie O’Hara next week.

But manager Mick McCarthy has already seen one possible challenger to Wayne Hennessey and Carl Ikeme slip the net , with Keiren Westwood joining Sunderland on a free transfer after his contract at Coventry expired.

Federici?

hope so. mccarthy is more than capable to step in full-time and anderson has shown his credentials in the u21's this summer. sell.

Agreed. These jessies are still bitter about the cheeky finger Mills gave them. Best centre half in the league for me. If he gets a move to the Prem League, i seen him getting a England call up in the next couple of years. But if he is not going to sign new contract, makes sense to sell him, 4million would be about fair.

I think it's more that the interested managers see the potential he has because he's shown it in a number of games, quite often the higher profile ones. They see that potential and believe they can harness it within their squad.

Reading fans aren't too fussed about the potential he has, or what he might offer amongst a different set of players, we're more likely to judge his performance and ability over all the games he's played in and that includes those where his lesser games or hot headedness have cost us.

There's a big difference between what we judge on and what prospective buyers look for.

OH FFS stop using a stupid gesture as an excuse to dismiss his detractors. I couldn;'t give a flying feck if he gave teh East stand the finger. I don't know who to laugh at more with the England call up suggestion. You or England.

You are incredibly protective over your little treasure Mills aren't you? If somebody dares to suggest that they believe other players are better than him you are immediately here to defend Mills and abuse the other person for having an opinion.

Bit of a dodgy example to use seeing as those were deals to keep them on Prem money so they'd see out a season to get us back up.

Well there must be something influencing your dislike towards him, as he is clearly our best centre half, at a great age and is only going to get better. Also Club captain.....

he's a first-team reading player, he's our captain, and he's highly rated by the management team and a number of premier league scouts because of the performances he has put in since joining us.

clearly the england comment is wide of the mark, but since when would reading ever have expected to have an england quality centre back anyway?

i don't understand why anybody calling themselves a 'fan' would post derogatory shite about him or express a desire to get shot of a player like mills. if you expect every reading centre back to be fabio cannavaro then go support chelsea and whinge about how slow john terry is instead.

if mills goes we are very unlikely to find a similar calibre replacement for the same money.

i'd say the same for pretty much all of our first-teamers.

we finished fifth in the league last season, and reached a playoff final that we could have won but for a post and an incredible last-ditch tackle. reading fans on this board are such spoilt princesses.

Yeah, it's the way he can't control himself, has ropey positioning, hoofs the ball all the time and commits loads of unnecessary cynical fouls. I think he's an awful person to make captain because he doesn't set a good example at all.

You Mills haters are deluded. What standard of player do you want at this level? Matt Mills is an excellent Championship centre-back. The Premier League agrees if the Premier League want to buy him.

So you want a better player than Mills? OK, name one that would be a realistic target that's proven at this level?

One of the meanest defences in the Championship last year by the way with only ONE regular centre back - Matt Mills.

I was watching the 2002-3 and 2003-4 seasons back the other day and couldn't believe how competitive we were with players like an aging Adi Williams and a calamitous John Mackie.

Mills is really decent and although not quite up to the standards of Matty Upson when he was here on loan, I think he can be as good as Upson one day. How old is Mills? 24?
