I suppose that, fortunately, I'm not a money-grabber. He's young, he can move anywhere, within reason, but I think Emma might prefer to be living around here with the proximity to London than the likes of Wolverhampton - so maybe she will have the final say.

I suppose there might be one professional footballer in the entire country who would turn down the chance to double his money at another League club - but he isn't Matt Mills.

Why do we get into involved discussions about
money when we have no idea if 10-15-20-25-30Ks are actually being offered?

JM was right when he moaned about the highly inflated wages.

That's why there's so few testimonials these days - players move around for the filthy lucre these days - and it's a shame - big money has ruined football for everyone.

Because we know the rough regions that Championship and Premier League players are paid. We know the previous wage bill we've had at the club and how much bigger it is in the Premier League.

Some of us have a very good idea of how much a few Reading players are on as well.

Well someone ITK told me that Sonko was on £18k in the championship when he was with us and was our highest paid player at that time.

That was after relegation when a lot of the team were on inflated wages.

When we came down and were carrying reduced Premier League wages that figure might've been the case. Not sure he'd have been the highest earner at any point in the Championship though.

No - no it wasn't. This was before the Prem.

And a lot of the players weren't happy about it.

Which illustrates the problem with wages - players don't actually care how much they earn - what they care about is being the highest (or at least equivalent) earner in their peer group. That might be highest in their club, or highest amongst England midfielders....

So raising teh pay of one player drags up the pay of everyone else.

If Matt Mill's as some of the aritcles suggest is prepared to lodge a transfer request, then I for one would be glad to see the back of him as we need players committed to our clubs fortunes.

In terms of the rumoured upto £20k per week he has been offered to stay with us, again if he turns it down I'm pleased for us as in Mills I see a good Championship Player but would be no more than poor to average in the premier league and certainly not someone who commands that sort of wage based on his performances for RFC.

So in summary you can't blame the lad if he gets the chance to increase his earnings, plus realise his dream of playing in the premier league (time will only tell if thats sitting on the bench or helping Wolves survive another season). If he goes, we bag £4m plus theres plenty more lower league centre backs to choose from with the right attitude, desire and ability that we could grab for upto £1m that would do at least the job Mills has done for us so far. If he stays we retain a captain who has true desire to achieve premier league status and someone who will need to prove he's worthy of the revised wage package.

I don't want Mills here if he's on 20k a week. We wouldn't offer him that anyway, but the only possible way I could see us making that sort of offer is if we did a Long, Doyle, Hunt on him and he has a sizable release clause inserted into his anus so if we cock up promotion this season he is able to leave if the offers come in, but personally I don't think the guy is worth £1m in wages for a Championship season.

That would be utterly insane! Sidwell was a goalscoring midfielder touted as one of the best players outside the Premier League who had served us very well. Sonko was someone we picked up on the cheap as rough diamond to polish and hadn't done that much with us before that season.

Sidwell was on £12k in the Premier League because he wouldn't accept a new contract, did someone seriously tell you Sonko was on £6k a week more than Sidwell before you take into account any promotion wage increase in his contract?

Don't believe it for a nano-second.

Neither do I.

Brentford probably weren't paying him any more than about £3k pw Max, so to have him on £18k at Reading within a year would be a tad unlikely.

He signed pre-season 2004 then signed a contract extension in December 2006 - that might have put him on £18k but (as everyone knows) we were already in the PL then.

Fair enough. I did just have a look to see when he was given a new contract and it was before the 05-06 season kicked off. I'd have said £18k was way above what we were paying at that time so if it's true then I can see why the other players might've got the arse over it.

He was coming off a very good 6 months though, and was a key player in the side, but that kind of money still sounds a bit unrealistic. I'll take your sources word on it though and just be amazed...

Sonko recently revealed that he is currently earning "just under £14,000 a week" (whilst talking about his frustration of not playing enough at Stoke or Pompey).

There's no way on earth that he'd have been on £18k pre-premier league with us.
