Matt Mills refuses to hand in transfer request
Wolves target Matt Mills has held talks with Reading and has decided against handing in a transfer request.

Mills has 12 months remaining on his current contract and has been offered a brand new deal by Reading, which is thought to be worth up to £20,000-a-week.

With Reading still wanting £4million if Mills decides against signing a new contract and Wolves apparently not willing to budge from £3million, our hopes of signing the 24-year-old defender look unlikely.

However it isn't all bad news.

Sources close to Mills have told the Express & Star that if we can agree a fee, then we are his first choice move.

Previously it wasn't clear who Mills favoured in regards to Stoke, Blackburn and us and yesterday Leicester also made a move for Reading captain.

But if this claim is true then the only sticking point is a fee and once
we've cracked that, Mills should be on his way to Molineux

...is not exactly as if he's spoilt for choice with quality clubs wanting his services ...i guess if he did choose Wolves it would more likely to be because of the distance to and from his pad in Richmond, and not to do with the beautiful game that Wolves play :)

I'd still choose Stoke over Wolves, but money talks. Blackburn and Wolves will be in a relegation scrap this season, Stoke I expect will be OK again.

Royal Lady If he doesn't go - and we up his wages - I trust we'll be extending another 2 or 3 years to the 1 year left on his contract.

Of course; and stick in a release fee clause.

Standard practice - and if he declines to sign a new contract then has stays on his current wage, as Sidwell did for the first PL season.

But would we see Sidwell-esque performances or those more akin to Shorey in his last season? At least he isn't squealing like a certain individual no longer with the club. And yes, I know Shorey was not in his final year of his contract but the comparison is too good to ignore.

I think with him being captain and having that responsibility he wont go down that route (of shorey) especially if he gets increased wages for another year

They don't say why he refuses. Presumably it's because although he'd be happy to go he isn't willing to give up some financial rights that his loyalty would earn him by not requesting to leave.

Handing in a request will make no difference to Reading as they'll, if recent history is anything to go by, still hold him to the same value as without a transfer request. Bit of a non-story for a headline!

Handing in a transfer request reduces the money he'd get. Standard football contracts have clauses in that the player gets a lump sum if the owning club decides to sell him - if he decides he wants a move, by "handing in a transfer request " he forfeits that sum.

So it may not all be down to loyalty or love of the team - if he knows he'll be sold without asking to be sold, he'll get a nice lump sum out of it.

Isn't that what I said?

he isn't willing to give up some financial rights that his loyalty would earn him by not requesting to leave

I can't understand why a player would hand in a transfer request, although I suppose by giving up your loyalty bonus you could be allowing the club to accept a little less for you (depending on how little or big your bonus was of course!).

apologies if this link has already been posted, probably the most laughable plaudits i have ever read since the introduction of the interwebz. Mills is an average defender overall, not because he is 'ok', but because he is only ever good or bad.

....guess the good thing about the Leicester offer is that lardarse Moxey will now need to "get real" with his clubs counter -offer if ones forthcoming...
