West Stand Man
Compo's Hat
royal67 The Daily Mail are stating that Reading have accepted a bid of £4m for Matt Mills from Leicester.......

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... epted.html

£4 million for Mills is massive LOLz but thanks all the same and good riddance.

This is a board for fans of Reading FC. What are you on here for?

£4m is great value for Mills and it means we can keep Long for next season. I'd say all parties would be happy with that. However we do need a centre back or two if Mills does go, which is a concern.

Keep Long? What did you put on your rice krispies?
The sale of Mills has nothing to do with an ambitious young footballer wanting to have a shot at the big time when his currency is at its highest.

Why does selling Mills for £4m mean we'll keep Long?

If someone comes in with an offer that RFC are willing to accept, he'll go - it's the "Reading way".

If Mills does go, we need to spend all of that £4m on 2 replacements for him and Khish.

agree ...the idea of playing Harte and or Gunnar out of position as makeshift centre backs , so as to save having to buy , worries me though .........in cases of emergency its fine, in cases of being thrifty it isnt

We do have Morrison?? Can't remember if he's the centre back we signed - but having him and Pearce instead of Mills and Khish won't be winning us much next season.

Why not? I rate Pearce as our best central defender and I would have preferred to have had him playing at the back end of last season. Morrison we know very little about but is rated highly. And also we will sign another CB as I don't believe McD will go into the season with only 2 specialists. We had 4 for the first half of last season and 5 for the second half.

right this would be my plan. Sell Long £7m, sell Mills £4m, and get Mackail Smith from under the noses of other championship clubs.

I would honestly be happy with that.

Morrison sounds very promising so no fear there, and with Pearce seems sound enough but we have a real lack of cover if Mills leaves. It's no godo people saying Griffin can cover CB, or Harte, or Bryn. Neither have any pace and we would be run ragged. One or two centre backs are a must of we let Millsy go.

But we wont.Past form says that the money will go to JM and help reduce his loan to
the club.We will either bring one of the youngsters through or bring someone in from the
lower leagues.Thats the "Reading way"

SymonsO If we did sell Mills, we wouldn't replace him and the squad would be a lot weaker next season.

We would buy another CB. Last summer we had three specialist CB's and we still signed Khiz. We also then went out in January and bought another.

Yet for some reason you seem to think that despite having already lost 2, possibly a third CB this summer we won't buy at least one new CB.

SymonsO If we did sell Mills, we wouldn't buy another CB anywhere near the same quality and the squad would be a lot weaker next season.

Why not though? We bought Mills in the first place didn't we? And for a club like us it is always about finding a great value player who can be as good as a player they are replacing and let's be honest we have an excellent track record of doing this (Marcus Williams excepted).

actually, doesnt past form say exactly the opposite, and that JM hasnt taken any money from the club, including repayment of loans.

Why would CMS even want to come to us?

We wouldnt entertain buying player at that price anyway

Am sure if we sell Mills there will be small funds for a new CB

I must admit I'm surprised at the extent of the interest in Mills and I'm now convinced we'll lose him, which I really didn't think would be the case a month or so ago. A couple of points though.

1) Before signing for us Harte had played most of his recent football at centre half

2) I'm not sure I believe the hype regarding Morrison as yet, although I'm hoping he'll be adequate as 3rd choice at least

3) Totally agree with WR that we won't risk going into the season with just 2 specialist centre halfs and a few emergency options as cover

4) I'm comfortable with Pearce stepping up and being a key player in the back four, however, if that back four is Griffin (or Cummings), AN Other, Pearce, Harte, then Mr AN Other needs to be the right player to compliment the others. I'm a little concerned with the players McDermott seems to favour at centre back, none of them have much pace and it creates a natural weakness.

I've never been Mills' biggest fan but he finished the season very strongly and has a lot of potential. I won't worry too much about losing him but I do think it will test our capability of attracting the right players when we come to replace him.

SymonsO Its not very often we spend £2m on a player.

If we do replace him (by buying) it will be with someone who has potential rather than a proven defender. Agreed, we do have a great track record in doing this but why take the gamble and rock the boat for 2m profit. We should be looking to keep our best players.

It is impossible to keep your best players for a club like Reading and to think we can is very naive. If these stories are true then we have been offered £4m for a player who is out of contract in 12 months time who is being told he can earn possibly £30k per week if he moves.

So why would he want to stay and why would we want to reject the bid and lose him for nothing next summer?

Or do you really believe we should be trying to match these ridiculous wages?

Looks like Mills will go so

Move Harte to centre half where he'll have to do less running

Use the funds to buy Bertrand

solves the pace problem whilst not losing the potency of Hartes free kicks.

Come on tee peg, I really want to know how much JM's loan to the club has been reduced by in recent years.

Does anyone else know the answer?
