He wont go to Leicester
Really.....?? They've just signed Craig Makail-Smith and I don't think the spending will stop there. Maybe Mills wants to play for an ambitious forward thinking club (and one thats likley to pay him far more than RFC will.....).
Let's hope you're right but Mr. Mills will find it far easier to pay for the running of his Audi R8 and girlfriend if employed by the Foxes......
..Mills want to play in Premiership ...Leicester for all their spending cannot guarantee Mills that...he'll go to a prem club imho and a bid that meets Readings price will come in from one of them ....

I hope so...but him and the club breaking off talks on a new contract seem to indicate to me that he probably is gone.

I think he was referring to your first comment.

And I agree with RR, we have a squad which isn't going to through a group hissy just because we sell a decent CB for silly money.

I think the tosh isn't about Mills going, it's about 5 players putting in transfer requests. Did that happen last season? No.

£4million for a Championship centre back is amazing money. Add that to the mistakes that we all see Mills do week in week out when we're not playing on TV. If we get £4million, everyone will be pleased.

How about when Long is sold after that? Long was expected to go and I think the guys were braced for that inevitability. Mills on the other hand would be an unexpected gut shot. Who is gonna play CB other than Pearce? Will the team spend the money to bring in a suitable replacement? I am sure McD will spin it to the best of his ability to put down any mutiny but if it is the Foxes he goes to what kind of message is that sending the guys? How is this moving the team forward? I get the impression that most of the lads are ambitious and want a chance to play in the PL. How would selling Mills, especially if it is to another championship club, be getting them closer to their promised land?

Fine...again I hope I am wrong. But if we keep selling off all of our best 20-25 year-old talent year after year we will end up with a team of has beens and probably never will be's. And how long ago did we bring in Mills, a PL player, with the intent of getting back there?

4 mil is great money but with what we will probably get for Long and what we can get for Feds, seeing that we have 2 solid young keepers in the wings, the selling of Mills is totally unwarranted imo. We have cut wages, selling off many players, over the past 2 years. We've had two good FA runs and made it to Wembley last year. I can't see us hurting that much for money. We can't be paying THAT much in wages. What gives?

If he wants to go he will go. Our price is £4million, if someone pays it he will go. He's turned down a new deal so we need to sell. Mills and Feds are easily replaceable. How was Mills a Premier League player when we bought him?

Not sure why you're getting your knickers in a twist about this. Mills isn't that good. I agree he had excellent games but not all the time.

I am not getting vexed about selling Mills or any other player if we have suitable replacements lined up. Ummmm...and Mills was with Manchester City before he moved to Doncaster. They musta thought he was a PL quality player.

I don't care, sell every player on the whole d*mn squad. It'll make next season that much more interesting...but probably not in a good sense, but exciting nonetheless. If we look hard enough I am betting that we could sell a whole bunch of players for more than we thought we could get for them. Does that mean we should go out and try to sell them all? Especially the core players?

Mills going makes no sense seeing that very recently he said he wanted to stay. Tbf I am tired with all the young developed talent constantly being replaced by long term prospects which could, or very well won't, work out. Can we ever expect that Reading FC will become an occasional buyer of players like Gylfi, Long and Mills instead of always selling? I look around and not all the Championship teams are selling all their players...

What part of Mills turning down a new contract do you not get? He said he's not going to ask for a move, he doesn't have to now. We will replace Mills, maybe this Colchester lad, and there will be someone on the Colchester message board moaning like hell like you are. Fair play to Mills, he wants to play Premier League football and he can't do it with us.

This is just simple Moneyball isn't it, if someone offers you more than a player is worth - sell. £4million for Mills is a no brainer. The accompanying rule is replace a player before you sell, presumably that's the Morrison signing.

Anyway, my guess is that the squad will be improved if he goes

Well let's see. One week Mills is sincerely saying he really wants to stay and the next he is turning down a perfectly good contract? I guess he is a psycho loony who has no idea what he wants. Maybe he should go then. Or then again maybe not...just like Gylfi didn't want to leave when we were told he did.

But if everyone here thinks we will be a better team without him and his spot being replaced some player from a division 1 or 2 side, who am I to say otherwise? Why don't we sell off all of our players and buy all of Colchester's...the logic around here seems to say we should be a better club for it?

And I am serious, all snark aside, if selling Mills makes Reading a better team on the pitch I am all for it!!! Sell him now!!!

I'm not convinced there's much anyone at the club can do about this situation...

There are obviously teams out there who are interested in Mills, and he only has 12 months left on his contract - the club are between a rock and a hard place, and Mills himself holds all the cards.

Ok - he said a while back he was committed to the club, but how many times do you hear that from a player just before he leaves? We're never going to pay the kind of salary he might get in the Prem, and he seems the sort that believes that he is better than a Championship player.

With a year left on his contract, he'll lose out on potentially a large lump sum if he puts in a transfer request, however, he doesn't need to do that - simply turning down our contract offer is enough. The club are now in the situation where Mills has backed them into a corner; they sell now for a reasonable sum, in January for probably considerably less, or let him go for free next Summer. The only sensible option is to maximise what they get and sell now.

A few people have asked why we let his contract run down to a year - I thought he was on a three year deal? Is it really realistic to renegotiate contract with players after only one year of a three year deal? That's hardly going to help to keep salaries under control is it?

I for one don't believe that anyone at the club entered the Summer break wanting to sell Mills, but he has made his choice and now all the club can do is try to maximise what they get and work out how to replace him. I think that some need to realise that in some cases the club is pretty helpless and that the players and their agents have them over a barrel.

FWIW I'd be quite comfortable with a Harte and Pearce pairing at CB as long as we can sort out a LB with good pace - Hartes distribution >>>>>>>>> Mills, and we get to keep Hartes free kicks.......could work out nicely!

I am glad we agree that despite what the team said Gylfi didn't want to move on. I still have my doubts about Mills wanting to go seeing just last week he said in the press that he really wanted to stay, but one thing is for sure his talks with the team over a new contract are at an impasse...I'm just not sure who is responsible for that situation developing. Maybe £4million is too good for the club to turn down. We'll see if Morrison defense can cope with the likes of Kevin Nolan. I hope he can but right now we have no proof of that being fact.

But I am all for any/all moves which strengthen Reading FC's team on the pitch. I don't see how the sale of Mills on its face will accomplish that but just like some people believe in God I will believe it based on faith in the team until proven otherwise by the results...

roadrunner How anyone here can dare fault him beyond me.

Yeah, perish the thought, eh Jay?

Now what was that shite nickname you tried to start for him but singularly failed to make stick? Something about a wabbit, wasn't it?

But then again, most things ARE beyond you.

WOLVES remain in pole position to capture Reading defender Matt Mills.

The Championship club have already agreed a £4 million fee with Leicester but the indications are that Wolves will come in and match it next week.

And then barring Stoke City entering a formal bidding process, and less likely Bolton or Blackburn, then Wolves will seal the transfer after the formalities of personal terms are sorted towards the end of next week.

Mills to his credit is doing everything by the book, refusing to hand in a transfer request. But he has made it clear he wants to play in the top division
