CayeneMatt Are we that short of CB's though:

Pearce
Gunnarson
Morrison
Harte (Yes, CB, no reason why not).

holsgrove breaks a leg Simple answer: yes we are short on CBs!

Gunnar and Harte should be emergencies only, and not part of a longer term plan.

Surely not detecting what I assume, should be sarcasm?!

cmonurz Never have I seen Reading fans so grateful that we have Alex Pearce and, er....

Pearce is so underated it's ridiculous. Considering how he started off for us he's improved considerably and I think he will be a rock for us this season. Morrison was highly rated at Swindon and Celtic were after him a couple of years ago. But I agree we will need to invest on some experienced cover, even it's a season long loan.

This is what we have at the moment if Mills goes

Pearce
Morrison
Gunnarsson (not his natural position)
Hector (only played in Ireland and ressies)
J.Mills (Only played in Dutch first division and ressies)
MacDonald (only played for ressies)

Harte played CB for Carlisle pretty much exclusively. I think his lack of pace would be far less exposed there than it currently is at full back in all honesty. I think his future is probably as a CB now.

leicsRoyal The longest contract in RFC history now needs to be put on the table.

Step forward Nicky Hammond.

^^ THIS ^^

£5m for Hunt, was it £6m for Kitson, MiLOLOLs.. Hammond deserves a Knighthood for how he does business at this club. It's completely changed the perception we once had where people thought we had to sell and would lose players for peanuts. Now any player with decent ability, or even Mills (LOL) takes a huge fee to let him go.

Hammond could have my cherry, I have no problem with that. Just don't talk in that soft voice at the same time.

'greed. I'd be happy if we brought in a decent centre-half and an attacking left-back, using Harte as cover for both positions.

Schards#2 There's no reason why we shouldn't spend every penny.

We were told when Gylfi was sold that that would fill the anticipated black hole at the end of last season and we went on to have a season that exceed financial expectations.

As it is, we'll probably pick someoe up to for £250,000 which is why it doesn't matter if the sale price is £2m, £5m or £20m, it isn't the team/fans that benefit from it being a fair, good or excellent bit of business. We just lose a player who will be replaced by a far cheaper one.

Who knows, they might just surprise us.

Personally I can see us spending 2 or 3 million on a CB. With Ing, Khish and Mills gone, we are looking a bit naked defensively... So I think Madejski will have to lose some of that fund whether he likes it or not.

But all our successful signings have been cheapish ones where we've spotted the potential and built on it.

All our crap signings have been expensive ones where we thought we were getting a "finished product" and got a liability instead.

So long may value buys continue.

This is true and the club has done spectacularly well in buying cheap players that have progressed into quality players. However, in the long term the house always wins, you cannot defy gravity and you cannot keep selling players for millions and replacing them with players for thousands without it having a long term drag on performance.

I'd rather we sought to keep the players we've made into the finished article rather than buy the finished article elsewhere.

£5m for Mills. Ha ha brilliant. Can't stand him - this is great news. Absolutely awful choice for captain...not the Reading way at all.

The prices this summer seem mental. £10m for Long isn't looking that far off.

Agree, i think one centre back is all thats needed, perhaps investing like we did on Matt Mills when both Bikey and Sonko left leaving a considerable void. Think its vital to get in a left back to put straight in (maybe Mills jnr?!) and we can rotate Harte in the squad as and when we need him (importance of set pieces cant be denied) whilst waving goodbye to Marcus Williams.

ZacNaloen It's 5 million quid

So? It could be £20 million for all I care, if we don't reinvest and bring in someone with a good, proven, track record at CB, it's worth diddly squat in my eyes.

and who wants diddly squat in their eyes?!sounds painful.

Yes, I agree with this. I think this is where he should be. He has to be in the team (remember, second highest scorer last yr), but his lack of pace was very evident toward the end of the season.

Harte's only downside as a CB is his lack of height, but he'd be an improvement on Mills. He has a brain and football nouse for a start .....

holsgrove breaks a leg Blimey you can say what you like about hammond but 5 million for Mills is laughable ala Kitson. I was very slowly starting to wam to Mills but to be honest i still think he is far too error prone and never likes to admits his mistakes, not a good recipe for a captain. Id have Griff as captain now or perhaps Ledge or Jobi (assuming he stays!). Cue finger pointing/gesticulations from Mills towards Schmeichel after our 90min winner at theirs in Aug!. Clearly we have some work to do at CB now, its not really the area i would have liked us to be even more thin after Ivar and Zurab have left so i think we need a strong signing in there to partner Pearce whilst Morrison is closer to 1st team action now.

Are we that short of CB's though:

Pearce
Gunnarson
Morrison
Harte (Yes, CB, no reason why not).

:|

oh come on!

harte and bryn can step in and do a job- theres no way we should or will go into this season with only two proper CBs, and none with any pace

OS says he is Leicester-born which might be a reason for moving there.

Soccerbase says he was born in Swindon.

SymonsO Reading get £5mn
Reading get weaker
Leicester get stronger

If we don't reinvest in a proven defender(s) then I am unhappy with the deal.

If we do show intent and invest the fee in players then I am happy with the deal.

I'd have preferred to sell him to a premier league club though. (I am one of the few who rate Mills!).

i rate him, but 5 million?!?!?!?!?!?!
