Lets agree then that on the big football balance sheet we'd all like to see more entries in the joy of victory column than in the pain of failure one. A profit of joy would be nice.

But you do have to wonder how many more shortfalls, that need to be filled, are going to be found before the end of August though dont you ??

I personally think you have taken a far too cynical view-point on this deal. It has put us in a strong position financially now so that we don't have to sell other key players, and in the process we have got an excellent fee for a player who is barely above average and who only had one year left on his contract.

And also I would be willing to put a fair amount of money on us signing a couple of CB's this year, either on loan or permanantly, who will do just as good a job as Mills did last year.

If they don't we should get a big slice of any incoming transfer fees (which will be big) to spend. The finances are in much better shape since we've stabilised after the first couple of seasons after relegation and Mills has covered this year's issues.

If we sell Long for £7m+ and Kebe for a couple of million or more and don't spend at least a few million more than we've already spent, then I don't think anyone would argue with being pissed off.

Although we may want to be holding a wedge in reserve for January seeing as we seem to rarely sell then these days, but frequently bring in a player or three.

Just as I thought this debt ridden game driven by "greed and sky" couldn't get any crazier a fellow Championship Club clamber out of the woodwork to offer a £5m fee for an average to decent (on his day at best) tier 2 player with just 1 year left on his contract!!

Great Business/PR/etc Hammond!! - forget the £90m estimated premiership payments for promotion, at this rate were be making that in tier 2 just from buying and selling, less the high tier 1 opperating costs - the surreal world that is ........................

Finally, a special congratulations to Sven, you certainly have the midas touch in persuading backers to spend big! Bit of advice though, you really need to scout more than just cup and play-off games live on sky to get a true and rounded view of your potential aquisition.

Well yes, but then (ignoring discussions such as these) I think we get that with RFC. Because of the good management and prudent approach to the finances.

There may not be many massively exciting days due to incoming transfer activity yet we still manage to sell players like Doyle, Kitson, Siggy, Mills and (presumably) Long at excellent profits. It really is a part of the plan now, and as I said, IT WORKS.

So we consistently get somethiong other than mid-table mediocrity (or worse) despite financial prudency and a Balance Sheet that is very strong in comparison to most other Football League clubs.

I think that's WIN WIN myself.

Maybe I was - I had this amazing dream that we were in the prem and had developed into a forward moving, progressive club.

No one was more piffed off than me with our totally avoidable relegation which was largely down to our manager refusing to spend his budget and electing not to sign players who would have walked into our first team.

However, that doesn't change the fact that few clubs outside of the Premiership's upper echelons have enjoyed as much success as ourselves in the last decade with two seasons surely standing as the best in the clubs history.

Since promotion to the 2nd in tier 2002, I believe our worst finish has been 9th and in that time we have left many, many, big spending rivals trailing in our wake as the likes of Charlton, Norwich, Southampton, Forest and LEICESTER have all fallen through the trap door into the third tier.

Sure, operating costs in any business need to be kept under control, but it is not in any sense "good business" to take your eye off your income streams.
