wasn't impressed tbh ran lots, jumped into challenges, got skinned by their right back by jumping in, him supporting harte scares me already. I think we have equally good players coming through the academy

Boys
I see the guy RFC were watching had one mention. We're probably bid for the centre half who played his first game for Derry. Pick him up for Euros 4 as replacement for Mills. Maybe a tad expensive for Royals!

Derry City 1 Shamrock Rovers 0
Friday, 08 July 2011 20:58
DERRY City blew the race for the Premier Division title wide open following this thriller at the Brandywell.
And it was a tale of two keepers, Shamrock Rovers’ Alan Mannus credited with a howler in the 53rd minute following a Danny Lafferty free-kick, while his opposite number, Gerard Doherty, produced a series of top drawer stops to keep the ‘Candy Stripes’ in front during the final third of the match.
In the end, the home side just about deserved their victory with Rovers only really sparking into action after Derry had broken the deadlock.
And the result certainly makes the race for the Premier Division title particularly interesting with St. Pat’s and Sligo Rovers also celebrating this outcome.
With Reading boss, Brian McDermott and his Director of Football, Nick Hammond, interested spectators at the Foyleside venue running their eyes over the James McClean, they will also have been impressed with the quality of a number of players on view.
Indeed, none more so that Derry's 20-year-old centre-half, Ryan McBride, who produced an accomplished performance in his first league start on home soil.
Derry certainly had quality chances to break the deadlock during the first half but Stephen McLaughlin and Eamon Zayed failed to take advantage.
Doherty, meanwhile, signaled his intent with an excellent block on Gary Twigg’s shot in the 28th minute.
But the best chance of the opening period was created by the home side.
In the 38th minute, following a catalogue of errors in the Rovers defence, Zayed drove a shot straight at Alan Mannus in a one-on-one situation.
And while Patrick McEleney latched onto the loose ball, his pass into the danger area was poked clear by the back-tracking Rovers skipper, Stephen Rice.
Rovers defender Clive Sives did well to head the ball clear of his goal as Derry finished the half strongly with Mannus doing well to produce a quality stop when denying Patrick McEleney.
The home side maintained the momentum after the break and they netted the goal their play deserved in the 53rd minute.
A Daniel Lafferty free-kick, 30 yards from goal appeared to bounce off the ground before striking the hand of Mannus who seemed to spill the ball into his net.
Rovers stepped up a gear and they went so close to restoring equality in the 74th minute when a Twigg shot on the turn was superbly turned away from his goal by Derry keeper, Doherty.
But Derry hit back with McLaughlin working his way forward before a James McClean effort was superbly parried by Mannus.
Doherty produced the goods again when pulling of a magnificent save from Billy Dennehy as Rovers pushed forward at every available opportunity.
And the keeper then made matters safe with a magnificent parry in the dying moments to deny Twigg from close range.
DERRY CITY: Doherty; S. McEleney, McBride, Greacen, Lafferty; P. McEleney (Harkin, 72), Higgins, Molloy, McClean; McLaughlin, Zayed.
SHAMROCK ROVERS: Mannus; Sullivan, Sives, Oman, Stevens; McCabe (Kelly, 58), Finn, Rice (Turner, 58), Dennehy; Twigg, Kilduff (O’Donnell, 72).
REFEREE: D Hancock (Dublin).

McClean looked like he was trying to hard last night, too eager to hoof it too. Obviously got vision, but not quite talented enough to pull most of it off (reminded me of Howard against Norwich at some point).

IN comparison, Lafferty looked very good at left back at that level

The Surgeon of Crowthorne Does this means that one of our wingers is on his way then? We do, in theory at least, currently have back-ups for each of our wingers.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean we're not out to get you .........MWAHAHAHAHAHA

Rumour off rumour site. Normally rubbish but this one might have the ring of truth about it.

If we are buying McClean I can only think that Kebe is off as we seem to a have a surfit of young up and coming wingers already (Obita, Walcott, R.Edwards plus Antonio) but arguably none are ready yet and not sure Antonio is good enough at Championship level.

McAnuff on right - Robson-Kanu left and McClean as sub??

Hope the rumour about Long is true!

Reading enquired about Chambers but were put off by the asking price and have now turned their attention to Colchester defender Magnus Okuonghae.

They have also had a bid accepted for Derry City winger James McClean in the region of £300,000.

Shane Long is due to sign a one year extension to his current contract once the club return from their trip to Slovenia.

If Long signed a new contract and we signed anyone i'd be chuffed!

Could be the case though. Maybe McD doesn't have Mills money to spend as theyre offering Long one season to get into the Prem with RFC on big wages, wouldnt surprise me to be fair if that was the case.

Saying that... £300k for McClean AND we still clearly need a defender

Longs contract will just be a clause saying he can leave for £8m or something.....remember Hunt signed a new deal shortly before fcuking off

Shit. What a blow that is. We're gonna give our own players a chance rather than take a risk with an unknown from the Irish league.

There's absolutely no value for money in the market right now. We're better off giving the likes of Taylor and Obita a chance.

I've read the articles and it says we're looking at a choice of several centrebacks to bring in, the most likely deal based on those players is a loan. Given McDermott's loan history, I suspect that would be with a view to a perm deal at the end of the season if things go well and the player isn't looking for too much in the way of wages.

couldn't agree more with this. how some people can moan about us choosing not to take a risk on an irish unknown and instead look to give the likes of obita and taylor a chance is baffling.

Looks like the club learnt a lesson from Bennett and Mooney. Just because they're pulling up trees in Ireland, doesn't mean they're good enough just because Long and Doyle came good.
