brendywendy the finances as i see them:

we were looking like losing 4 million a year.
we sold sigurdsson for 7 million, meaning the 4 million was sorted, and we reinvested the remaining 3 million in transfer fees, wages, and loans for some much needed defenders/experience.
this worked and we improved on the performance we had with sig in the team, making the playoffs

this time round, the wage bill has been reduced, so the black hole is reduced this year. maybe to ~2 or 3 million?
we sell mills for 5 million, after other payments to donny etc leaving us with 1-2 million profit on the deal? so id imagine that means we can spend the 1-2 million on transfer/wages of new CB to replace him.
i believe any further sales(long-7m) will mean that we will keep some for the next seasons black hole, but we should then be able to spend the 4-5 million left over on a striker & LB(+wages)
leaving us finacially secure for years, more than able to cope with player transitions, probably with a stronger squad over all, and remaining totally competetive.

you also have to look t McDs/NHs actions over this.which show total control over the situation imo
mills has been offered a new contract, but not a huge one.McD probably knew he wanted out/wanted shot of him himself- he wasnt his player, and isnt really a McD type of player.
he gets a replacement in early last january so we wouldnt be scraping around for something in the summer-giving him enough time to bed in, get to know the quad, and start pushing his way in, and lets matt go for a huge profit when he had 1 year left, wanted out, and made maximum possible profit on him

i just dont get whats not to like about that(given that we do reinvest much of this money)

Just reading through this thread. Well said Brendy. Bit surprised at the general criticism really, it was just a deal too good to turn down just like the Sig one last year, and a deal that frankly beggars belief really. We had turned down a bid for Mills before from Wolves and we don't usually sell key players to other Championship clubs so only a deal like that would have persuaded us to sell to Leicester.

That said I don't think Mills is as valuable as Sig was and Long is, 1-2m should be enough to get a decent replacement in. I would hope that Long would stay now though, especially given starliason's comment about McD selling either one star player or several less valuable players.

I would have said that Mills was a McD player though. I've never considered him to be a Rodgers signing, and he was captain persisting with him sometimes when his performances didn't warrant it.

OK - so Reading aren't going to bring in a permanant replac.

ement for Mills. As it states in the Evening Post today.

Is this still the case even if they get £10m for Shane Long?

Most likely, that money will be used to plug future black holes.. The board and chairman have laid out their stall.. We're facing forty plus games with two first team CB's... Yaay

Of course because if we get another £10mill then the black hole in the balance sheet will get bigger. That's the way the madman runs RFC. Plus the money will disappear again into the ether. Nothiong changes.

Can't see the excitement over this. So we bring in a decent and experienced CB on loan for the season. What's the problem?

So we're going to do what we have done for the last two years? The horror.

...and to be fair, if he has to go down that route McD seems to generally look towards loans where he has a half decent chance of turning it into a permanent deal i.e. Leigertwood and Griffin

That's not quite true. For the last two years we have had 3 specialist central defenders with Championship experience supplemented by an experienced loan signing. At the moment we have 1 specialist central defender with Championship experience. Any loan signing is really a replacement for Zurab, not Mills.

"I think it will be a loan with where we are at the moment."

AT THE MOMENT.
So anyone else is sold a centre back will brought in and if we sold Long we'd bring in a cb and a striker i 'd guess.

If you look at the article on the left of the back page 'Long won't leave for Royals' rivals' it contains the following two paragraphs: 'If Long were to go, Mc Dermott would not be given funds to replace him. Instead, he will be forced to turn to either Simon Church, Mathieu Manset, Nicholas Bignall or Brett Williams to lead the line alongside Noel Hunt'

No surprise if this is true. Still never mind the accounts will look great (or will they?), which is all that matters

This is no surprise as it is an annual event, bigger concerns are where is next years £5m black hole filler going to come from as most of the valuable familly silver has now gone ???

What a bunch of tarts! You pick up on some remark by Johnny Fordham or some random hobnobber and you spin it into your black fantasy of abuse and oppression. Roll on August and let the winning resume, because off season is a time for all the losers to come out and play.

This is a bit of a joke really. Millions raised on transfer fees.....so we aim to 'borrow' an experienced centre-half like McShane? This wasn't really what the loan system was designed for. Be nice to think we might actually invest in a permanent signing of decent, Championship-ready quality.

No? then please tell me what exactly was the loan system designed for? A system where you can bring in a player to cover a short fall in a certain position. Looks like we're doing exactly that. The fact that we can bring in players on loan also gives us a chance to 'take a look' and possibly make a bid. This seems to have worked well in the recent past with the likes of Griffin, Leigertwood, Kish etc. I have no problems with the way the Club does it. This way we don't end up with any Asaba's, Crawfords, Flecks, Mass Sarr's etc. and a huge (un-sustainable) deficit on the transfer market.

It's a bit different this transfer window though. *IF* Long goes for around £10m as has been touted, then the sales of Mills and Long will generate in excess of £14.5m plus add ons. I can't recall Reading ever generating that sort of money from transfers before. So surely some should get invested back into the squad?

But if you still want to defend the club regardless then carry on.

Sorry mate, you've got me there. Please explain, i'm sure this has a meaning, or perhaps some subliminal message somewhere.

PS i'm going to bed now, so don't wait up too late in anticipation of a reply. I'll check it out in a day or two.

They have a team of in-house alchemists who take basic, raw resources and turn them into silver.
