Ambition is relative, the club, a fan or the author of the question can each have different interpretations of what they expect.

The only way anyone can really judge the clubs ambition before a ball is even kicked will be based on our league position come May 2012.

Ain't that the truth. The club were one half a match of better defending away from promotion last season. One 45 minute period in which they performed far below the level of consistency they had established since the turn of the year. That's evidence enough of ambition for me. I never cease to be amazed how many people ignore the football side and reduce it to a shopping competition.

Wimb Do we really need ANOTHER thread on this?

We have had countless threads on this subject for at least 10 years. The amazingly dense fraternity within our fan base made all the same accusations regarding ambition everytime we signed a Kitson or Doyle for peanuts when Coppell was building his record breaking side and, naturally, once we were promoted we would be coming straight back down unless we bought Rooney and Ronaldo :|

Libertine It was massive success...no matter how fleeting. It is in the past now. Where do we go from here? What are our ambitions now?

I think that is a legitimate question to ask. Even as recent as a couple years ago we were bringing in players like Mills. Now we are being told, through the manager, don't expect that kind of investment in the team now...after we sell Mills.

PARACHUTE PAYMENTS

I think these are the 2 words you are missing.......................................That would be £12m a season we were receiving when we bought Mills that we don't receive any more.

HTH........................but I won't hold my breath.

The whole OP is fundamentally flawed, in the same way that virtually any post with the "ambition" word tends to be.

Of course we have ambition - everyone at the club wants the club to be in the PL.

But that ambition is also tempered by realism - we're not going to spend money we don't have chasing the dream.

So we do have ambition, of course we do - but we don't have blind ambition.

FiNeRaIn This is not the first time players have left complaining about what goes on behind the scene's, I remember darren o'dea doing the same thing and getting crap for it, gylfi is sad to have been annoyed at getting forced out and now mills too, there is a pattern emerging here...but of course the RTG's will have you believe they are all idiots and its all nonsense.

odea was pissed off cos we hardly played him, and let him go back.
gylfi said he was sad to go, but ofr his career had no real choice.
and massive lol at us "forcing" mills out- offered a bumper contract, club captain, and he went to a clubwho were doubling his wages, and giving it large about buying promotion.

so your an idiot, and thats all nonsense

Alan Partridge I don't know whats more boring, all these threads on the same thing or brendywendy replying to every post on every thread kissing the clubs arse.

And all this over Matt Mills? A truly average defender with about 2 braincells and your typical modern day over paid mercenary player whose never achieved anything in the game and gives it the bertie big bollocks. Couldn't care less if i never see him play again.

Great post, fully agreed.

Ian Royal There we go then, a note to those who use text speak or ignore punctuation (frimmers); poorly constructed sentences lead to problems.

O'Dea was here during Rodgers time. There obviously were behind the scenes problems. I still don't think anyone's shown anything close to Gylfi being forced out.

I'll side with the ever reliable McDermott and Hammond over the unreliable Mills spouting off some veiled, but ultimately meaningless comment on Twitter any day of the week.

What has o'dea being here during rodgers time have to do with anything, that's an utterly idiot comment..the board and other behind the scene's personnel are exactly the same. What you are really saying is you disagree with both of them and are calling them both liars.

i think hes just saying that clearly rodgers made some weird decisions here, and the club was not doing well when he was here. there was a problem with the club. one that JM saw, and adressed, by sacking rodgers

We never expected the players that Coppell brought into the club would have the calibre to take us up. Who thought Doyle, Hunt, Sonko etc. were gonna be the signings that take Reading to the Premier League? You would never have expected it.

you dont need to question it....it doesnt exist

The club clearly does have ambition. It may not match yours (who knows) but it exists. End of.

The club has moved forward incredibly over the last 10 years and we are a much bigger club today than we were then. We have also had most of our best ever seasons in this period.

I think the Chairman can be a little overly cautious at times and is possibly just a little too risk averse, but it is patently ridiculous to say there is no ambition.

There is simply ambition tempered by caution.

You lot are clueless. RFC have no ambition and will be found out this season. If we go down I don't give a shit. It's what we deserve. The only positive is that the Madman may **** off. The soon the betterrrrr

Just for anyone who cares, but this is the BEST time in the club's history to be a Reading fan.

Enjoy it.

Don't grumble, eh SDR?

You're an idiot, because I didn't say we forced mills out - re-read the conversation me and ian royal had. As for the other two points, you've completely just dismissed them and attributed random reasoning to them. You have absolutely no idea why o'dea made the comments he did, you just assume its because he didn't play much, moronic at best and absolutely without foundation other than to suit your argument. I've heard from more than one person gylfi did not want to leave and had we not been up within a season or two had his sights set on the EPL, definitely not germany. When the bid came in, he was put under severe pressure behind the scenes to leave so we could get the cash.

FiNeRaIn Umm two seasons in the prem is " massive success"...ok. Lets not go overboard here.

Obviously one of the 'new fans'.
I bet you weren't at RFC 1-0 York city on new years day 1993(i think), crowd under 1000.
The worst game i've ever seen. Only their fan wearing an anorac kept us all amused;
"anorac, give us a wave....."
"anorac, what's the score?"
"coat for christmas, you got your coat for christmas....."

So, a club, of the level we're at isn't supposed to take a £7m offer seriously? Do me a favour. You are always forgetting that it's a BUSINESS. We see it as something to hold on to and feel attached to, and sometimes entertainment. But it's a BUSINESS. Unless you're an accountant and a bloody good one at that, then maybe offer your services to RFC Finerain. You clearly seem to have your finger on the pulse of what you think is financially prudent for RFC to do at all times.

We were never in a position not to turn down such an offer from Hoffenheim. Even if Gylfi didn't want to go, it's not the same as turning down an offer from Burnley. It's the bloody Bundesliga and (as far as I recollect) £7m up front. Mills, well, if like most people, see £5m as being vastly over his worth then clearly the club think that also. Mills was/is never worth £5m.

Don't get me wrong, I used to think like you. I was against the club for not speculating in the Premiership when we SHOULD have done what we could to survive, but didn't. But I don't know what it takes to run a football club from top to bottom (especially one that had to deal with once being in the Premiership and subsequently adjusting.) I don't know how much it takes to run an Academy (which is now producing talent) and the ever increasing player wages. I don't know how the club deals with the loans they have and how to mitigate those losses. Do you?

I now understand that 'we' run our club somewhat differently to some other clubs that hedge their bets a bit more excessively than us. If it doesn't fit into some folks mindset of buy, buy, buy, sell now and again, but just BE SUCCESSFUL...then I'm afraid that's just not Reading FC. Accept it or not, it's obviously your volition, but fighting against the reality of it is rather futile. It is what it is.

weird that two seperate people thought u said mills was forced out.
And regarding sig. Random reasoning>>your sources at the club

that said, i only feel compelled to be so relentlessly positive on here in the face ofsuch widespread and deep negativity. im as worried as anyone to hear the noises coming from the club, and if we get to th e end of the window having sold mills and long, and not replaced them ill be even more worried.
i just trust them to do what is right, and if it doesnt work, matters will be addressed in jan.
imo

Reading FC - a club so poor that it asks Plymouth Argyle 10p for a cup of tea.

Actually there was more than supposed sources at the club. Or did BBCRB completely fabricate the interview they broadcast with the Sig after he left the club, during which he stated that the club had persuaded him to leave, as they felt it was in the best interests of him and the club?
