Don't we have some England defenders in the academy? What ever happened to Angus MacDonald or Jack Mills? I thought one of them earned a U19 call-up.
However, it looks like Morrison is stepping up as he was handed squad number 15, so the second choice centre back? (5 for Pearce, 15 is just a 1 in front of it)

Like everyone else I'm looking at our current squad and thinking where and how we could realistically improve the group during this transfer window.

I was just wondering what activity would please you as fellow Reading fans? I personally think we are only 1 solid CB and a creative spark from being a great team at this level (assuming no one else leaves).

For a CB I would be absolutely delighted if we were able to capture Matt Kilgallon from Sunderland. He has got it all as a defender and think he would be a more than adequate replacement for Mills. Not only that he is availble and I'm sure the move would work within our budget.

In terms of a creative spark, I would love us to try and do something in the loan market and try and get someone along the lines of Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool. I really rated him when he was at Charlton and had that something a bit special to break down teams.

The above would be my realistic dream scenario and would really get me excited about the forthcoming season. So what would your realistic dream scenario be?

MacDonald and Mills played against Swindon Supermarine on Tuesday evening. MacDonald in particular looked like he was cruising in second gear against that level of opposition.

Centreback with a bit of pace and chump experience - IN
Young (ish) left back with pace - IN

If Long goes - a striker
If Howard goes - an attacking midfielder with a good range of passing who can score goals (unless Taylor's ready to play a bigger part)
If Kebe goes - a winger

I'd be perfectly happy with that and I think it's achievable

Yes the club like to keep us informed of what's exactly going on. But we all know this isn't the full picture. Brian unfortunately doesn't even know.

McD has come out and said if we lose Long then that will be it in terms of players leaving the club. That might well be what Brian wants, but you can we really believe that if a £4mill offer comes in for someone like Jem or Jimmy, the board will just turn their noses up and flatly refuse it

I LOVE the fact we are a well run club.

I HATE the fact that for the forseeable future we will be selling off our star assets year on year to plug this black hole deficit we annually encounter.

I just find it astonishing we can spend 9k on a new players wages but cant offer anything in terms of a transfer fee?

I'm no accountant and I'm bound to get SLATED for posting this jibe but it makes me f*cking livid knowing the club have raked it in and we have f*ck all to spend.

i do say that that counts for almost every club. arsenal/spurs/mancity/villa/everton etc have spent much of this summer trying, and probably failing to keep players who were under contract. its just a fact of life. only the best club in the world are immune. at the minute that is barcelona, which is why even man united couldnt keep ronaldo.

it is shit- even i am shocked if the rumours and heresay are true and McD really isnt going to see any extra money from player sales this year. but i do trust that the accounts show a true picture, and that the money hasnt been stolen/syphoned off.


as for the 9k wages but no fee, its easy to understand, shirley? we have the money to pay someone 9k a week. if we need to use half of that to pay a fee, we'll only be able to pay 4.5 k, and i doubt even gardener would have come here for that.

i think its wrong to say the club have raked anything in. while id guess the last two years will show profit due to the player sales, the money has been taken primarily by the players, not the club. you may criticise the fact that we payed them that much, but even with our wages as they are its hard to attract players, so you cant just say no, im not paying that, or you wont get any players wanting tto play for you
