all he did was a copy and paste off of jonny fordham's twitter but left off the beginning.

speaking of which:

Jonny Fordham #readingfc look to have won the race for #Spurs centre-back, but McDermott remains coy http://bit.ly/rcxwOV

Double defensive signing next week?

Brian McDermott remained coy on growing speculation linking Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Bongani Khumalo with a season-long loan to Reading.

It is understood that a deal to bring the South Africa international to Madejski Stadium is done in principal.

Royals look to have beaten Scottish Premier League side Rangers and Championship rivals Bristol City to the services of the 24-year-old.

When asked about a possible deal for Khumalo, McDermott played his cards close to his chest.

“He is a player I know well,” the manager told the Reading Post after his side beat Northampton Town 3-0 in a friendly at Sixfields.

A game that also saw Ibrahima Sonko take to the field in his return on trial at the club.

However, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was slightly more open when questioned about the Bafana Bafana World Cup star later that same day.

After Spurs’ 3-0 Vodacom Challenge Final win over Orlando Pirates, Redknapp said: “It looks like it will happen. We have the option of a recall in January, but it will be a good move for him. He’s a good lad.

“He lacks experience, this is only his first year. I have experienced defenders like Ledley King, William Gallas, Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and Sebastien Bassong.

“It will be difficult for him to get into the team. He will be much better off going out on loan to gain experience and adapt to the lifestyle in England.

“I’m sure in a year he will come back a better player. Then it will be up to him to prove whether he is good enough to start for Spurs.”

Bongani played six games when on loan at Preston North End at the end of last season.

sonko also played well today against northampton, and being a player the club are already familiar with i fancy his chances of securing a return to reading shortly. the tottenham boy sounds quite promising as well. inexperienced but has something about him and i'm quite intrigued about his possible signing although only a season loan is a little disappointing. more experience would have been better when we already have the young pearce and morrison here.

do you feel more confident heading into the new season if we had these four centre backs to choose from?

LOL @ Rangers if we do sign him, we're a bigger draw than they are.

it's only a season loan deal, and he only lives in north london. it makes more sense to come here rather than go to glasgow. redknapp sounds very supportive of the player and knows all about the standard of teams in this league. he will develop better here than in a sub-standard division like the spl.

I really liked Pearce and Morrison today: a very good mix of composure, decent distribution and safe hoofing when necessary. They can start as first choice pairing. But we need some cover and Sonko and a 24-yo Spurs player sounds fine.

Good news. Khumalo looks a good prospect, will pose more of a threat to Pearce and Morisson for a starting place than Sonko would, but Ibu will provide decent cover when called upon.
So yeah, more confident 8)

I'll watch the Preston game from the end of last season on the OS tomorrow if it's still on there. He played in that. Will post up what I think.

Very happy with these developments. And more excited about Sonko's return than many of you are. He was immense for a season and a bit. Who knows, a return to Madejski might see a return to form.

Seeing as Kingdom of Heaven isn't very good I've just watched the first half. Looks good all round to me. Composed, no-nonsense on the ball, but not a hoof-merchant. Good in the air, fairly quick. Marshalled Long and Howard well. Just what we're looking for.

I like.

The championship is far more competitive than the SPL, plus it will get him used to the english game better than playing against weak Scottish sides each week.

Must have something in the locker for Harry to pick him up, I'll be pleased if we get him in!! Must admit do not want Sonko, get someone else instead.
