We live in an easy-access, blame, society.

People are used to being able to rant when things aren't going their way - in fact it's what the internet is best at. And on an anonymous message board you don't have to use facts p background knowledge to back up your opinions - as long as you say "FACT" at the end that's enough. And say something enough, no matter how far-fetched, and gullible people without
background knowledge will start to believe eit.

And, of course, everything is always someone's fault these days, and it's always so much easier to blame and criticise than to be positive and objective.

There is a lot of positivity on here that is just blind faith and optimism based on either naivity, blissful ignorance or just wishful thinking.

Although I'm all for being positive I think a touch of realism and a grip on reality gives a much more balanced view than just accepting everything as rosey without any inteligent and informed thought going into it (that comment's not pointed at you Dirk).

It is yes, but it's also often backed up by subsequent events.

It sometimes appears that some people think Reading are above criticism, infallible or somehow aren't subject to the same rules of the football jungle that every other club is.

i think you may be making the same mistake as i do when looking at a STG post there.
i dont think anyone on this board believes the club are above criticism, or that they deserve constant criticism.
thats just the way it looks sometimes when reading posts

Ironically I have been accused of being too RTG by many and too SGT by others - so I think I must be balanced.

In terms of the team and Brian McD I am definitely RTG. I fully expect Brian to work another miracle this season and surprise us again.

However, on the financial side of the club it still instinctively feels to me that things don't entirely stack up. I have also been disappointed at times that a tiny bit more ambition - such as investing in one or two more players in the second PL season and in selling Siggy a year too soon - have in turn cost us a relegation and a failed promotion attempt - so I guess in terms of the overall management of the club I have become STG.

But you're missing the point that in the second PL season investment was availabel but the manager chose not to use it. So to blame that on the overall management of the club is unfair.

But you're missing the point that in the second PL season investment was availabel but the manager chose not to use it. So to blame that on the overall management of the club is unfair.

Also, assuming we did make that signing or two that Coppell backed out of at the last second, and instead stayed up, what happens the next season? We'd have narrowly avoided relegation, so be in need of some serious player influx to stay up again. Especially with so many of the buys (including longer term ones) we had made, not being good enough and our better players another year older.

We'd have either been relegated the next season, or we'd have had to spend more again. And again the season after. It's never about the difference you can make in one season, it's about the way you run the club long term and the expectation levels you set each season.

We've set out how we do things, people are ready for it even if they don't like it. If we up the ante one season, it'll be expected EVERY season.

But they have been spending well beyond their means and are likely to be in major trouble when the inevitable happens. All it takes is one bad season and that extra spending each season, which accumulates big debt over 3, 4 or 5 years, suddenly comes back to haunt you.

Clearly we made a big mistake second season. I think few people dispute that, and it's fairly well documented that the money was there but Coppell bottled spending it. That was a major mistake. But it was pretty much a one off. Yet the STGs take it as proof positive that Madejski is running the club badly, when in fact he's getting the balance pretty much spot on every season.
