RUMOUR - Alex McCarthy to the SPL

by tomrfcurz » 03 Aug 2011 08:11

Today, the Reading Post will report both Hearts and Celtic are hoping to get Alex McCarthy on loan for the season. McDermott does not want to lose him
on a permanent transfer but is prepared to let him go out on loan. At the moment Celtic are leading the race and McCarthy is warm to the idea of first team football consistently in the SPL.

I really do hope not!

A decent season there and we are not likely to see him in a Reading shirt again. :x

I was wondering about McCarthy when I saw Fordhams tweet last night - he's not featured in any of the friendlies in the last week (other than on the bench at Bristol) and had a mysterious knock which kept him out of the Swindon game...
Only other candidates that Fordham could be talking about are Feds or Kebe I guess...

Sounds ike potentially a good deal if BMac (rightly or wrongly) sees Feds as his No1 - hopefully Andersen will get some first-team opportunities as a result.

I think this will be a good move for him. He gets vital game time rather than sitting on the bench all season. He could, big if, play Champions League football. Federici is clearly number one so it is better that McCarthy plys his trade somewhere else for the season.

Great move for McCarthy. Lousy move for Reading FC.

If McCarthy does well there his value will increase, but I doubt we'll see him play for us again.

Fail to see how RFC could possibly gain out of this

Just to state the obvious. We can't afford to let McCarthy go on a year long loan to Celtic if we then sell Federici close to the August deadline, because someone makes us an offer we can't refuse. Much as I rate Andersen, we can't go from 4 senior keepers to 1.
So I expect there will a fair bit of wait and see yet.

It's pretty clear no one wants Fed at the price we'll sell. Most of the potentials seem to have signed other keepers. The chances of keeping McCarthy don't look good by this, but better an SPL side than a PL or Champ one. It's unlikely they'll be able to afford a perm move for him, there'll be questions over the quality he's playing, with only a good test from Rangers so it won't automatically make him a big target for a Prem club.

Great move for McCarthy and great news for Reading FC.

Our number 1 keeper remains number 1 and looks like staying, our up and coming and raw talent can gain experience at a top scottish premier side and comeback a better player. Win win.

Agreed 100%, I don't think McDermott is strong enough to drop Federici and for some reason for goal keepers there seems to be this rule that Federici is the senior keeper and deserves his place as number one. If it was on merit alone, McCArthy would be in goal Saturday.

I'd rather him go out on loan and return with even more experience, than sit on a bench and get unhappy!

But no one wants him. He's in cloud cuckoo land and thinks he's better than he is. Not happy with this at all.
