Row Z Royal If it was me, I'd have little reminders pop up on my Outlook. *bing bong tie down Long*

Whereas this time last year most "no nothing" idiots on here would have had "Long's cr@p, get rid"

And until then he mostly was.

No he wasn't.

He was a young player who had always played 2nd, 3rd or 4th fiddle to other more experienced strikers. The talent was always there but our "know nothings" could never see it, just as they could never see it in the likes of Kebe, yet in his first season as a first team regular, surprise, SURPRISE!!!!, he ended up with a goal tally that Nicky "Can't pass, won't pass" Forster could only dream of.

Even before last season he had a very good track record as an impact sub and he's still only 24 :|

WBA don't throw their money away lightly and clearly drove a hard bargain but if it's £4.5m up front rising to a potential £6.5m that's a good deal for both clubs. It's also hard to imagine a better deal for Shane................................a very decent manager at a club where he should play every week provided he performs close to his true potential.

I'm gutted that Long has gone, after his epic second half of last season, because he fitted our system so well and was a mainstay of the team. I also love the fact that he was a really decent and genuine type. But I think that if he was bound to go we've done well to get as much money as we have for a player who is strictly limited. Just hope Madejski allows McDermott at least a bit of the fee to improve the team with. We still have our good wingers, so I don't see why the goals should totally dry up (unless Church becomes first choice  ).

I think, with Obita coming through, the conversion of HRK to a centre forward should be seriously looked into--as it probably will be.

Snowball It's worth remembering that Shane's contract was extended for a year, just a year ago.

Kudos to RFC, Mac and Hammond for making us around 6 Million when we could have lost Shane for nothing.

Yes, it's awesome that they keep remembering to renew our players' contracts. Well done all.

EDIT: they probably have all the dates written in some diary or something.

Oh, of course it's easy and obvious. Players NEVER leave on a free by running down their contract, do they?

ONE year, not two or three. Not renewed this year when the date came up.

And how many numpties thought we shouldn't have bothered to renew?

Wasn't the contract extended during the January transfer window?

Players only leave on a free running down their contract in one of two circumstances.
1) The club don't think they're worth a new new contract.
2) The player wants to run down their contract.

The club don't forget to offer one. Or never quite get round to it because they're busy.

Bandini: Wasn't it in December just before he came really good? Hence all the wondering about what sort of a release clause he might have.

Nov/Dec time I believe.

As with Doyle and Hunt before, it looks like it was done in order to maintain his value and on an agreement between the club and player that he'd be free to leave if we didn't go up.

Good work by the club really.

Not sure what kind of deal Leicester offered, but was it better than £4.5m up front? Granted, Premier League is probably all we would have sold to.

I suspect that the £4.5m referred to was the "lump sum" already in our account. The rest - up to the 6-7m we suspect it may be -will be payed in installments in the usual way and in full (ie not subject to add ons and clauses, though I'd imagine we probably have some of those as the cream on top). Whatever you think of him, Hammond has done another cracking job here.

Brian McDermott There will be money, not to the level we got in, but there will be something and I will have to discuss it with the club. It's not just about getting a certain amount, you can't pick a Shane Long off the street, it doesn't happen. We're looking, trying to find opportunities for us and we'll keep looking.

If something happens and we like it then yes we'll do it, if not we won't, we won't just do it for the sake of it. We've got good players here, they are working hard, they deserve their chance, we will only do something if it's right.

brendywendy he was dropped due to the playoff game.

May be, but who knows. You can't trust anything the management teams say because most of it's just soundbites to make sure they don't say anything that'll get jumped on by the press.

Marco Tardelli, the manager's trusted lieutenant, said on Thursday: "It is fair to say that Simon Cox is ahead of Shane Long at this moment in time. He has impressed not just me but you as well, no? He has played well but I think he's a good player.

"For us, he's very important because he receives the ball and waits for the team. He helps the other striker. He's good. He works very, very hard for the team. He plays well. He holds up the ball well and can wait for his team-mates to link up. He is a good player. He has a good level of technical ability also."

This lot don't sound the most objective of sources but they/Tardelli don't seem to put it down to Long being effected by the Play Offs.

Interesting to see that Long has apparently been given the nod ahead of Doyle for Ireland's upcoming game against Slovakia.
