At the time of leaving us Kitson. If you consider performances since they left us, then probably Doyle so far.

No votes so far for Shunt?

Certainly the 'best player' at winding up all Chelski fans, so on that basis alone gets my vote.

roadrunner
No Fixed Abode Conner Wickham.

Maggots and little fish... We didn't let Wickham go!! His parents moved to East Anglia.

Now your facts when trying to be a smart arse.

Do you mean 'know'?

Reading still let him go as the thread title suggests, irrespective of the circumstances.

Naturally you would assume "Let go" implies RFC had some sort of control in the circumstances.

Reading had to 'let him go' due to his parents moving. So he was let go. HTH. MWAH. Much love.

Big Foot We've not "let go" any of the players mentioned, we've sold them.

In terms of players "let go" I'd say Ahmet Rifat

On the same basis,Charlie Austin?

Can't believe three pages in and I'm the first to mention Upson. IIRC we had the option to buy him on a good deal, but declined. I thought he was quality. One of the two 'ambition' chicken-outs that have cost us - the other of course, Sidwell.

Some are confusing the best player with the player we missed the most... in particular Sidwell, a great player who wasn't suitably replaced, so the hole he left in the side appeared quite big. However I would agree that Sigardsson was the best player we've let go in their prime (Little was better for us, but past it when he left).

I agree with Forbury Lion. Although losing Sidwell was a massive blow at the time and contributed to our relegation the next season he wasn't even the best player in that team. Gylfi is the most talented footballer I've ever seen in a Reading shirt. The guy is just class already and appears, from youtube footage and Bundesliga match reports, to be getting better and better.

I'm young enough that I never witnessed Robin Friday play and have only heard about his brilliance from others.

It's definitely Gylfi for pure quality. The thing I'm worried about is that the more we cut the cloth by selling our best player(s), the earlier we need the academy players to perform. I'm guilty of already heaping too much expectation on Obita and he's only 17. Sig was 20 when he broke into the team, which isn't really that young.

roadrunner We didn't let Sidwell go. He saw his contract out.

1. Sigurdsson
2. Doyle
3. Long

I'd go with this although Long may overtake Doyle before too long.

In terms of accomplishments, consider the following:

This ex Reading player has

Played for England in the World Cup
Won the FA Cup
Won the League Cup twice
Won the European Cup Winners Cup

Played under Brian Clough and Alex Ferguson.

Whilst these achievements might yet be exceeded by Doyle (or less likely, Long or Sig), the best Reading player to leave on go on to better things is Neil Webb.
