Very good signing, much needed, but why wait until now to recruit when we knew that 3 central defenders would be leaving before the start of this season?

Neil Warnock has hit out at Southampton for dragging their heels over the signing of Kaspars Gorkss – and revealed he is “delighted” Reading captured the defender.

Southampton declared an interest in Gorkss after Rangers circulated his name for a transfer during the summer, but have also been on the trail of Bristol City’s Liam Fontaine.

And as an agreement between the Saints and QPR finally seemed close, Reading manager Brian McDermott came in with a bid after having an offer for centre-back Paul Robinson rejected by Millwall.

The Royals promptly signed Gorkss on a three-year contract in a deal worth around £900,000.

“We had Southampton messing about for three weeks and to be honest I’d had enough of that,” said Warnock.

“Brian McDermott was magnificent when he spoke to me. Then within five minutes he was talking to the player, within two hours was having a meal with him, and then he signed him. That’s how to do business.

“At Southampton we had a chairman who was talking to us for weeks and weeks, and I’m delighted Kaspars has now gone to Reading. It’s a good club.”

R’s boss Warnock, who hopes to seal the signing of Joey Barton in the next 24 hours, insists he had no doubts about letting Gorkss go despite Rangers’ limited defensive options.

Bradley Orr and Kieron Dyer have picked up injuries, while Clint Hill is suspended and QPR were unable to recall Peter Ramage from his loan at Crystal Palace.

But Warnock said: “Kaspars knew he wasn’t going to be in my plans. I spoke to him and said: ‘Look, you’ve been fantastic for me and I think if you can get a good club for three years, this is the time to do it.’

“He did great for me and I thanked him for that. He’s a fabulous person as well as a good player.”

M-U-R-T-Y
NR_Royal I'm happy with this but only on the basis that we don't play Griffin or Harte. Otherwise our defence would be pathetically slow.

:?

Problem? :?:

Teddy Sherringham had zero pace but his ability to read the game allowed him to create space. Same applied to Ivar. He had no pace but his speed of thought more than made up for it. Hopefully Gorkss can be as good.

I wish Harte and Griffin had the same ability.

Is no one else slightly concerned that Colin is sitting someone cackling away at how he's screwed us over again by taking four year's worth of RFC's transfer budget and selling us a dud? He seems worryingly cheerful in these interviews...

Yeah I'm sure giving away one of last seasons best defenders and championship winning players to us has him rolling around laughing. :|

This is a good signing by RFC.

Of course, it could be argued that if he were that good, Colin would have kept him. However, all reports suggest we've got ourselves exactly the player we needed - so fingers crossed it all works out.

marcusopp Isn't it nice to have a player that hasn't covered himself with tattoos like some kind of chav!

First thing that should be checked in the 'due diligance' tests before a player joins Reading.

Later comes the ability to score from the penalty spot ....

Yeah and we got to hear from some around here that Leigertwood was supposedly pretty shite, and basically useless, when we got him from them too. How did that turn out?

To be fair, Griffin's ability to read the game helped us out when he joined on loan. many times he would position himself perfectly to make a timely interception. Sadly, what I have seen of Harte does not suggest that he has this ability.

I think the key here is when he was on loan. He was a disaster at the end of last season and has carried on as he left off. Possibly carrying an injury, and now a hamstring, and his arse is massive. Not the same player than arrived on loan.

Griffin consistently finds himself out of position.

Royal Lady Tbf we don't know that it IS £900k spent, because we don't disclose what we pay for players or sell players for, plus we'll have paid it in instalments won't we, so we haven't splashed out nearly £1 million in one hit. I hope he's as good as people are saying - we NEED someone to give the team about impetus and spirit.

I see you point this out about how much we spend, but seem to conveniently ignore it about what we receive.
