Coppell always said that Long had the potential to be better than Doyle.

Looks like he's being proved right.

He didn't say that once.

What sort of manager comes out and claims that one striker has the potential to be better than the other.

Can you immagine BMD going...Noel hunts good but I think lawson d'ath has much more potential.

Utter bollox. Those noises were made by Cork fans when we signed him, not by coppell.

Nor do I.

I said it, years ago, but later retracted it because I thought that Long's development had been severely impacted by his lack of games.

Would be a bit of a shock considering ones a midfielder and the other a striker.

I'm quite sure Coppell did go on record as saying something along those lines, It may have been a shrewd move to get the fans off Long's back, Give Long hope that he had a future at the club and maybe even a hint at Doyle not to get complacent.

Wasn't there some comments about someone being embarrassingly bad in training shortly after we'd signed Long and Doyle? I'd always assumed that was Long. He had the attributes, i.e pace, physique and could jump, but very little natural skill. So you have to hand it to the RFC training staff for turning him into the player he now is.

There were some rumours that the squad were shocked at how awful Long was in training when he first joined. I suspect they were made up by a doomer or wum personally.

I remember hearing something similar. It was a case that Long was so bad that he would have struggled to get into a pub team. He really didn't have a clue. Funny what happens when some time and effort is put in by all concerned.

I thought it was Nick Hammond. I can't find all the notes of fans forums but I have found this in April 2006

Nick Hammond Shane Long is young and naïve but naturally gifted with pace and strength. He will require patience from everyone including the supporters. He has a grounded and mature attitude.
