German cup started tonight and the big shock of the night is non-league RB Leipzig winning 3-2 at home to Wolfsburg.

There is, incidentally, a very interesting story about (7th division) Eimsbüttel who are playing (one of my local sides) Greuther Fürth (2. Bl) on Sunday. (Amateur) Eimsbüttel are due to get €120,000 for reaching the first round proper of the cup and agreed that the players would get half of that money and that the other half would go to the club to renovate a part of their training facilities. The players, however, then decided to demanded the whole €120,000. The club refused so the players (and manager) all quit. The club announced that the second team would face Fürth but then the second team (and their manager) all quit too.

Fürth will play Eimsbüttel's youth team on Sunday. So, the youth team of a 7th division team are playing the team that finished (the equivalent) of 4th in the Championship - you can't get odds in Germany on Fürth winning by more than 10 goals.

Anyone fancy changing the thread title?

Anyway, round 1 of the Eredivisie was this weekend, kicking off unusually early. Feyenoord kicked off the season with a 2-0 win in the Rotterdam derby at Excelsior's Stadion Woudestein and found themselves top of the league. Fairly safe to say they won't do that again this season.

Results Round 1:

Excelsior 0-2 Feyenoord Fernandez 55, van Steensel 71
Roda JC 2-1 FC Groningen Fledderus 76, Malki 87; Bacuna 11. Vormer sent off 11 - Roda JC
RKC Waalwijk 2-2 Heracles Almelo Braber 86, ten Voorde 89; Everton 31, Plet 80. van der Linden sent off 85 - Heracles Almelo
sc Heerenveen 2-2 NEC Assaidi 47, Narsingh 70; Nuytinck 84, van Nijland 89.Elm sent off 85 - Heerenveen
VVV-Venlo 0-0 FC Utrecht
AZ 3-1 PSV Martens 26, Viergever 40, Altidore 80; Mertens 45+2. Moisander sent off 82 - AZ
De Graafschap 1-4 Ajax van der Pavert 15; Sulejmani 22 & 62, Boerrigter 31, Janssen 65
ADO Den Haag 0-0 Vitesse
NAC Breda 0-1 FC Twente Janko 27

Feyenoord win again, but your eagerly awaited (by me at least) round-up would benefit from a clip of Alderwireld's trademark goal this arvo against Hereenveen

Round 2 of the Eredivisie brought no real shocks with it. Ajax, Feyenoord and FC Twente all maintain 100% records with ultimately comfortable wins, while eight clubs remain winless - FC Utrecht, RKC Waalwijk, ADO Den Haag, De Graafschap, sc Heerenveen, VVV-Venlo, NAC Breda and Excelsior (the latter two also pointless). Mention to a couple of individual performances - Jerson Cabral for Feyenoord who looked a class apart, tearing Roda JC's defence to shreds and scoring two superb goals to boot, and as bb mentions, Toby Alderweireld's absolute brahma in Ajax's win against sc Heerenveen.

In his autobiography Philip Lahm After six weeks we already knew it will not work with Klinsmann (at Bayern). We only had fitness training sessions under him, absolutely no tactical work whatsoever. We as players were then given time to sit down together on our own and decide tactics for the next match.

Round 4 of the Eredivisie and FC Twente maintain their 100% record at the top with a comfortable 4-1 victory over VVV-Venlo. Ajax and Feyenoord remain unbeaten after an Amsterdam 4-1 win over Vitesse Arnhem and a 2-2 draw against Heerenveen, although the Rotterdammers will be disappointed to only secure a point after Heerenveen were reduced to ten men on 64 and nine men on 80. De Graafschap, VVV-Venlo, sc Heerenveen, NAC Breda and Excelsior remain winless. Point to note - former Bristol City loanee Evander Sno turning out and scoring for minnows RKC Waalwijk.

Helluva ballgame going on @ the San Siro for the 2011/12 Serie A curtain-raiser

Lazio were two up inside of 21 minutes thru both halves of their new strikeforce in Klose and Cisse, but Ibra and Cassano struck four minutes apart to draw the champions level on 33'

Gattuso limped off on 20' and was spelled by van Bommel

Still half an hour left in this one

Debut yesterday. Came on as a 65th minute sub and set up the 3rd goal.

Picking up possession in the centre of the pitch, he embarked on a slaloming run that took him past five players before cutting the ball back for Obraniak to slot home

That's shambolic defending mind, just throwing his leg at it instead of making a decent jump. Lucky they were 6-0 up though.

Have the joys of watching all the Serie A games for work this season so may as well post on this thread a bit from now on.

Ridiculous game tonight in Palermo. Italian football never does 4-3 games!

Couple of absolute crackers from Miccoli and Pinilla to win the points, the Pinilla goal really is worth seeing.

Saw comfortable wins for Juventus and Udinese earlier.

Osasuna didn't much give a oxf*rd tbf, and aggregate goal-difference isn't the first-order tiebreaker in Spain anyway (and echoed on Fab --worked some real wizardry)

I didn't post my thoughts after last weekend --and they were mercifully scant and brief as it was-- so I'll just fold 'em in here

Barca slipped up away to Sociedad last weekend --Xavi and Cesc scored 90 seconds apart before eleven minutes were gone, and then the lot more or less went to sleep --Villa an ill-advised and woefully underhit back-pass from near the halfway line on the Barcelona left toward Valdes, and that was duly punished as Sociedad pounced for their opener and ended up taking a point from the match

Also saw later on that an obligatory dead-ball was played to Valdes from way down the other end as he was walking back toward his own goal, and his defenders were yelling at him, and he finally turns around just in time to see the ball fizzling goalward and flops on it like it was a live grenade that landed on his living room floor

Echoing Compo's thoughts on that 7-goal thriller at Palermo last weekend --you didn't dare avert your eyes, and I guess it only helps if you take the action in Serie A off of the mainland (witness Cagliari, provisional table-toppers now they've won their first two and with most of the division set to play on Sunday)

Inter and Roma now on just a point each after their draw at the San Siro tonite

In Germany last weekend, champions Dortmund got beat at home by newly promoted Hertha

Keep an eye on Hamburg --bottom of the Bundesliga table with a solitary point won from six matches after losing 0-1 to 'Gladbach today, which at least masks the 17 they've shipped on the season while scoring 6 of their own

They've got Stuttgart away and then Schalke at home in their next two before the paper strength of their opposition eases some, but nigh a quarter of the season will be gone by then

Hamburg is also the only club to be ever present in the 1. Bundesliga since its inception in 1963 - if they get rid of Michael Oenning and replace him with someone half-decent, they won't go down, but it would be fun to see them struggle.

But Oenning is really not made out to be a manager. A decent Nr. 2 perhaps but not a manager. He started at Nuremberg and took us out of the second league into the first with a third place finish and play-off (which was only to be expected with the biggest and best selection of players and being the largest club in that league at the time) but in the first league, it was a disaster. Halfway through the season, FCN were 'certainties' to go down and went into the break after losing at home to Freiburg, 0-4 away to Dortmund, 0-4 at home to HSV, and then 0-3 away to Cologne. The players weren't speaking to him and the 'inside' story (the not too well kept secret) is that he had managed to bed goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer's wife in his short time here. He was fired. Dieter Hecking took over, somehow turned the season around and kept Nuremberg up with the same group of players. In Hecking's first full season, Nuremberg finished 6th, and this season are currently 7th. The difference between the two men is immense.

And then he got the Nr. 2 job at Hamburg, and was promoted when Armin Veh was fired after losing 6-0 to Bayern. He won his first game as trainer 6-2 against Cologne in mid-March and Hamburg have not won another game since. 13 games in charge, his record is - Won 1 Drawn 6 Lost 6. He took over when the club was 'underachieving' in 8th place. They are now 18th. The press here are calling HSV 'directionless' and 'confused' - yes, because they have a clown for a manager.

Having posted all of this, I expect HSV to win a valuable point in Stuttgart next Friday and to then beat Schalke the week after- remember who you have to thank Michael.

Superb stuff from Napoli again, now five points ahead of last year's champions AC Milan after beating them 3-1. Serious title contenders!
