One of our better performances of the season as we up our game against a better team, but they sneak a 0-1 win against us.

I am missing this one as I head off to Cornwall to pick up the luggage I forgot to bring home in August.....consequently I am hoping it is a really shit game that we win 1-0, as I get rabidly jealous when I miss a cracker. Reality tells me a comfortable Boro win is likely and I am going for Reading 1 (La Fondre) Boro 3.

Hignett (after a dubiously awarded free-kick is taken with the ball still moving).

2-3

Reading go 2-0 up, but Boro come back and snatch it at the last.

Post-match quotes
BMcD "I'm disappointed that my team does not play through to the end, but then the captain leads by example"
Fed on Alf "If that t*sser had buried those chances in the first half you wouldn't be picking me up on my c*ck-ups for 2 of the goals - which you can't blame me for when we have a defence like a sieve"

If we field a back four of Mills_Gorkss_Pearce_Cummings again we'll concede at the very least two goals and I doubt we'll be able to make up that defecit again.

0-2

T.R.O.L.I. 0-1

Hignett (after a dubiously awarded free-kick is taken with the ball still moving).

Was this the game when we were given the free-kick only for the ref to be bullied into swapping his decision, they took it quickly and scored?

Yep - refereed by (as alluded to by Dirk in the 4-7 v Pompey thread) the "Butcher of Bootle" George Cain.

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-cocacola-cup--hignett-applies-the-finish-for-middlesbrough-1137314.html
A controversial goal three minutes into stoppage time by Craig Hignett, the outstanding performer in a fractious game, swept Middlesbrough into the last four of the Coca-Cola Cup at Reading's expense in the Elm Park rain last night.

Middlesbrough last season's defeated finalists, looked certain to be taken to extra time by their First Division rivals after a "goal" by Gianluca Festa was disallowed by referee George Cain - a butcher from Bootle - with three minutes remaining.

Fully six minutes later, all prospect of avoiding the additional half- hour seemed to have disappeared as brawling players squared up to each other in the Middlesbrough half. When the dust settled both sides appeared to believe first that a dropped ball had been awarded, then a free-kick to Reading, and took up their positions accordingly.

When Middlesbrough realised the decision had gone their way, Neil Maddison played a quickly taken free-kick to Paul Merson, the England player in turn found Hignett in the inside-left channel. His sweetly struck cross- shot left Nicky Hammond helpless.

With Boro' boasting the tightest defence in the second tier, with five goals shipped in nine outings this has 0-0 all over it
