Warning about "free" parking at the Reading Hilton

by DavidM62 » 01 Oct 2011 19:36

I saw the large display for free parking for Reading FC supporters and made enquiries at the start of the season. They said yes the parking was free and they hoped that people would use the bar before or after the game, but it wasn't a problem if you didn't.

Arrived today and went up the reception just to show our tickets as normal to be told that the parking was free for two hours and after that you had to use the bar or else it was chargeable.

Bit annoyed at this change which was not mentioned before and left the hotel in principle and went to the Charity car park. Missed the start of the game as a result.

I thought this was underhand by the hotel and I just want to make sure no one else gets caught out.

Change of deal without warning leading to unexpected charges. Pretty easy to work out the problem really.

Just buy a glass of coke and be done with it. I know there is a principle but some places have stipulations. Clearly it's about upping their bar trade so nip in their early, have a drink and off to the match.

Moving the goalposts once you've started playing. Poor form, thanks for the heads up DavidM62.

I guess it was inevitable it would happen sooner or later though.

I was unaware of this 'free' deal. However, even though they've moved the goalposts it still seems a pretty good deal. A couple of drinks @£7-8 + free parking or £7-8 for parking and no drinks? I know which I would choose.

Me too.

Park at the Speedway and you don't build up the unnecessary thirst you build up walking to the hotel that you then quench with your 'free' drink.

Plus you'll be home 20mins earlier by parking in the Speedway, to your own already-bought drinks.

No-brainer.

Hang on a minute, did he have a contract with them?

What's he want, a hand written letter from them informing they're doing something within their rights?

Too far to walk. Especially if it's raining.

So will the bus pick take me to my parents house to drop the kids off then drop me at the stadium, and then do the reverse on the way home after the match? Oh and for less money than it costs me to drive myself?

Oh shit, I've just realised the bus won't actually wait for us outside the Oakford after the match for when we decide to go on elsewhere, you're right, it's so inconvenient
