Mick McCarthy will send Michael Kightly into reserve action on Tuesday after seeing the winger miss out on a loan move to Nottingham Forest.

Wolves were prepared to let the former England U21 international link up with Forest as he works his way back to full match fitness.

Following an injury-ravaged period in his career, Kightly is determined to get vital minutes under his belt and recapture his best form.

A spell at the City Ground would have allowed him to take in regular football, with Forest in the market for creative talent.

Steve McClaren was keen to strike a deal and Wolves were prepared to let him go but Forest failed to piece together a suitable financial package and talks broke down.

McClaren has now left his post with the Championship club and McCarthy, who will field Kightly in a second string fixture against AFC Telford in midweek, admits he has been left bemused by the whole situation.

He told the Express and Star: "There was interest - I'd spoken to Steve McClaren about Michael Kightly but I've no idea what happened because I was open to it and so was Kightly."

Reports have suggested that Forest were also keen on Adam Hammill, but McCarthy insists a deal for the 23-year-old was never discussed.

He added: "No. They wanted a winger and we've got Kightly, but Adam was never in line to go."

Apparently, this deal broke down as the Forest board felt that WCBAP...even in the loan market!!!

probably because apart from a short stint at Wolfsburg the blokes record at club level is excellent.

Gotta say though his tenure at Forest, support or no support, was a total shambles. He inherited a good team there and i bet the board are regretting falling out with that drunk Billy Davies (whom id have at Reading like a shot if McD left).

With the sort of funding he had there, one would have expected him to do better.
Instead he kept playing the same horrendously boring "tactics", usually 5-3-2, which means no wingers, and I remember every time there was a televised match with that shitty team on tv it was equally poor entertainment every single time.

The guy squandered the money available to him, and his spell there has been horribly overrated by many.

I'd rather take the opinion of the fans of the club in question than yours. But thanks for offering your insight.

I wasn't the one using Wikipedia. I have actually used genuine facts about his record at Middlesbrough, which is widely regarded as the most successful period intheir history (and to add further weight to my opinion, my cousin is a former Boro player who still has a lot of contacts and friends at the club including the current manager Tony Mowbray who he played alongside).

Of course we could just rely on an opinion based on some ramblings on Wikipedia.

Enjoying it immensley has nothing to do with his skill as a manager. We conceded 7 goals to Pompey and Spurs in one season - none of us enjoyed it, but it didn't tarnish our view of Coppell.

1. Do we need another winger, especially one who is going to be lacking any match fitness for a chunk of his time at a loan club?
2. WCBAP
3. Even if the answer to 1. was yes, and the answer to 2. wasn't insurmountable, there is still the issue of a bit of bad blood over the Matt Mills non-transfer.
