Phil Neville "Rooney banned for three games what a joke - if it was a Dutch, Spanish, Italian or German player they wouldn't even get one game #fact."

I tend to agree with him, except it's an opinion not a fact. A petulant rather than malicious act but an easy target for the England hating authorities to throw the book.

I know Neville is a friend of Rooney's so would expect him to back Wayne up but other players would get a ban of sorts....even UEFA/FIFA wouldn't stop a ban based on which country the player comes from.

Doubt Rooney's previous record of red cards helped him and it was violent conduct without being provoked.

Its the timing that makes this worse naturually (depending on your personal view ofcourse)

One could argue Rooney hasn't bothered to turn up in a major tournament for a whille and maybe an extended rest will actaully get him determined to impress when allowed to play....if the team get through the group.

I can't believe people are questioning the ban. If it was a domestic game, it would have been an automatic 3-match ban as it was violent conduct. If he does go, he'll only end up playing (at most) 1 game as we'll go out in the quarters as usual anyway.

Why is it a 3 match ban for the Euro finals?

This does not happen in England a three match bans covers league cup, FA cup and league games?

Surely it should be a ban for 3 international matches.

And of course when we've played Rooney our performances have been immaculate and second to none

Therefore it does not matter in the slightest, we'll still be as disappointing - just now all the boring pundits will go on about how good we would have been in the group stages if he hadn't have been so stupid in Montenegro.

They're all for competitive matches - it'd be a bit like having a player sent off the last day of the season and not wanting him to miss the FA Cup Final so organising a load of friendlies

Sorry but if player X is sent off for his club in a game and gets a 3 game ban then he is banned from the next three competitive games for that club otherwise clubs could arrange a friendly game and curtail the effect of the ban.

The same is therefore true at international level - competitive fixtures only apply.

Is there any truth in the suggestion that the FA might not appeal as an additional match being added would mean Rooney missing the first game of the 2014 qualifying campaign?

Why is it a joke?

What ban would Rooney get if that had been a Premier League game?

(I think you will find that it would warrant a 3 match ban)

I'd only take Rooney if, by the end of the season, there aren't 4 in form strikers to choose from; as has been said, if we get through the group stages, why change a winning team?

There isn’t enough depth in the squad not to take him along. Ideally they’d replace him with less of a hothead but too few options.

Really??

Bent
Defoe
Carroll
Sturridge
Wellbeck
Crouch
Owen (a mere 40 international goals)

....and thats before any other striker coming into form during the season.

Seems like a degree of depth there..............

Every sodding tournament we have some distraction from "the team" selecting a player who is has no chance of playing all the games at full potential.

It never works out for the best. Leave him behind and let the squad build its own spirit and momentum without the distraction of Rooney. Him being there would be a demotivating factor for the other players, particularly the strikers, aware of the fact that the supposed best player is waiting to start the Qtr final, however well they all perform without him. Also the pressure on Rooney to perform if / when we did get to the Qtr finals would be too great for him. He rarely performs well on the biggest European / International stages when iot REALLY matters. (He'd probably do a Gascoigne FA Cup Final trick and run around like a mad thing and get sent off again.)

Better off without him.

Of course we take him. There's normally at least one outfield player hanging around scratching his arse, it might as well be him for the first three games (being optimistic). It would be pretty stupid to get through to the knock out games and not have him in the squad.

There's more chance of us getting to the Qtr finals in the first place if he's not in the squad.

I don't think that's right, and the "distraction" arguments aren't very plausible; indeed they are themselves something of a distraction from the fact that our players typically haven't been good enough.

Of course it's right. Having an extra striker in the squad who can actually play in the Group stage rather than just sit watching must surely increase the chance of us getting through.

All good players, agreed, but not in the same class as Rooney. Aren't Owen's best days behind him? I do rate Defoe when he's on form though must admit.

The simple fact is - Rooney is the only world class player we have....

In the groups we are likely to face the "lesser" teams - but as soon as we progress through we are going to be playing the better sides, games we need our best XI playing in.

Personally i would take him along as we have the option of Walcott playing up top so wouldn't be short of strikers for the groups. But lets face it, when have we used EVERY player we take along so having Rooney there wont make any difference and you never know, we may make the final (Greece won it with an average side)

Owen isn't in Capone's plans. I can't see that changing.
Welbeck hasn't done nearly enough yet to prove he's ready but might be a punt.
Carroll? Please no.

We really aren't blessed with strikers at the moment.

I can see us taking Rooney, Crouch, Sturridge and A.Nother. Not all that confident tbf.

As I wrote before, there's always at least one player doing nothing, so I don't believe that for the 3 group games our chances are materially improved by having 20 outfield players instead of 19.

But when Walcott was taken "for the experience" a few years ago when he was too young, we actually ran out of strikers.
