MATT "Rooster" ROBINSON

by windjammer » 23 Oct 2011 21:21

As well as being a Royals fan since 90-91 I am also sad enough to watch "Deal Or No Deal"". Recorded it today while watching Chelsea commit suicide and watched it later. Woman called Steph Robinson from Swindon was the contestant and her husband Matt was one of the box openers. Yes it was Rooster, still looking exactly the same slaphead he was back in the ealy "Noughties", Good player as I remember, first choice left back until his place was taken by the promising young Nicky Shorey we bought from Leyton Orient . Those days were League One of course but Rooster was a popular player and when he lost his place he eventually joined Oxford Utd. Still playing non-league for Swindon Supermarine apparently at the age of 36

Maybe three years ago I went down to Eastbourne Borough for the visit of Oxford United. Rooster was playing. As he ran past my standing position on the pitch side I shouted out "Oxford United are shit! Oxford United are shit!" muchy to the aumusment of the Borough fans behind me. If I remember rightly I think the game finished 1-1, so he wasn't able to help Oxford defeat lower league opposition. I didn't get to the replay at the Kassam though...

His wife wouldn't pick box number 3 during the game "As that's my husband's football shirt number and it's always unlucky !" Mind you she did win £5,000 in the end

Signing Matt Robinson was the catalyst for our turnaround. Proper creepy looking mind.

+ another one!!

Rooster brought a lot of stability to the team and was a decent player. As I remember he was quite badly injured and was never the same player afterwards. Phil Whitehead was also a good signing and was again an important member of the squad that got us promoted!!

He was utter dogshit after getting reduced by a Millwall player in front of the East Stand in the 4-3 (?) defeat where Neil Harris scored a hat-trick.

Terrible from the time he returned from injury. I used to blame him for everything, including the p/o final defeat.

him and Butler signed about the same time and turned the season around from heading for relegation to having a bit of a chance of the play offs. Never the same again after his injury which was a shame.

He took over as LB from Stuart Gray, it was always going to be favourable for him.

Agree with Mags about his ending though, even Andy Legg would have been an improvement.

His missus was similar on DOND - great start but tossed it all way midway through and the end result was a bit :| , mind you I missed a bit as I had to prepare the roast spuds for dinner yesterday evening.

Remember him puncturing a lung in front of u25 against Colchester! Played I'm possibly my favourite ever game when we beat Oxford 4-3 at home when Tony Rougier literally scored one off his arse and one off his knee in the last 5 mins to win the game in the pissing rain! :D :D

Remember the goal keeping error in the same game from Whithead (think it was him), when he slid past the ball and just succeeded in stopping it for the Oxford striker to tap in!! Classic game, thought Rougier was going to be world class on that performance.

Wan't a bad player compared to what came before (Gray, Gurney), but I think our improvement was arguably more down to someone else who joined the club at about the same time. Step forward, Martin Allen.
