Back from the game - Palace

by manny96 » 29 Oct 2011 18:37

Bit of a scrappy one with not many chances at each end. I agreed with a Palace fan on the train that we had the best of it but ultimately a draw was a fair reflection. He seemed to reckon it was a stonewall pen towards the end with Federici coming out but I was pretty certain he got a touch on the ball

I didn't see a push for the dissallowed goal but it was a pretty packed box, with bodies all over the place. It's a shame as it would have made the trip worthwhile. Mills looked better and dealt well enough with the dangerous Zaha (a petulant little boy as it happens).

Another draw isn't ideal but we looked pretty tight at the back against a Palace side playing really well. They were pretty poor today and we werent ruthless enough with the few chances we did have. Although we defended well I really feel like there's a lack of fluency in attack, not helped by the hoofballs from the back. Palace showed a real urge to get the ball down and move it about. I don't think we're lacking quality but it's a similar story to the run of draws last year when we weren't quite getting the rub of the green and squeezing the extra points out of games.

Onto the next one.

Decent game, burst into life in the second half which we completely dominated, albeit for an clear palace penalty which we got lucky. Sheer jubilation turned into sheer frustration in a split second as Gorkss saw. Ref bottled that as he didnt give that penalty five minutes earlier. We need to have better composure. Should have scored from numerous chances in second half. Great cross by Mcanuff for I think Le fondre to head wide, then quality ball from Kebe for him to hit the bar. If we had a little more confidence we would have won easily, against a very poor Palace.

Gorkss was outstanding as always. Leigertwood and Karacan worked hard and seem to be forming a good partnership. Kanu has disappointed me in last two games. Never takes on his man and seems bereft of confidence. Church was poor, but Cummings looks class at the moment, and forms a good partnership with Mcanuff.

All in all would have taken a draw before the game, but after controlling second half disappointed not to take one of our chances. Atmosphere was quality, although there was one kid trying to sing songs and getting frustrated no one was joining in. He was singing 'sit down and behave urself a lot', which made me think he needs to look in the mirror.

Firstly let me say our much maligned defence was not troubled this afternoon and dealt with most if not everything with ease. (That includes our full backs)

Secondly Dont get downbeat about our home support because apart from a few kids down the front of the Holmesdale end, Palace support is shocking.

Thirdly I thought the ref was poor. Let them get away with tugging, pushing, fowling and then for some strange reason disallowed what looked like a perfectly good goal at the death. Went mental fell over etc etc and then realised it had not been given
(To be fair I thought they may have had a penalty but it was up the other end and I would have to see the replay. The ref waved their protests away) Still never mind!

Through beer goggles we were by far the better team against a mostly hapless Palarse!
We totally dominated the midfield with Legs and Jem bossing. Gorks and Pearce were faultless. In fact it was hard to pick fault with anyone today.

I consider it 6 points dropped in the last three games. Games that we deserved and should have won!

We are really starting to play as a team and looking good. Roll on Forest.

Before the game, would have taken a draw away at a form team. Having been there, a point is a bad result. We were far better than them, made the better chances and were denied by the ref in the final minute. We need to start winning all these games we deserve to if we're serious about promotion.

On paper, 3 points from our last 3 games is a good return. In reality, it should have been 9. Imagine how much a better position we'd be in with that...

Denied by the ref???? I havnt seen a more blatant penalty not given in a long time? That's the worst palace have played all season yet you couldn't beat them. Mid table finish for you if that display is anything to go by.

Can anyone explain the mentality of the idiots who were booing our players at the end? What on earth was that about? The team played well again and were unfortunate not to win.

I had the 'privilege' of sitting behind the goal we defended in the second half. Feds clearly got the ball first - so no pen.
The disallowed goal was nearly 150 yards away so I've no idea about that one - so clearly should have been allowed

I was stood right behind you. You falling over was the best comedy moment of the afternoon - apart from the fox and the Beyonce 'lookalike', of course!!
This was the first game I've been to for a looong time and I have to say that I agree with all you've written. We were good. Couldn't see what happened with their penalty appeal, but from where I was it looked like a pen. Couldn't see anything wrong with our disallowed goal. The kids you spoke about in the Palace end who kept their support going all game were demnstrating against EPPP and fair play to them.

Lots of teams seem to be reserving their worst display of the season for when they play Reading.

Odd that.
