The tripping over the ball and general clumsiness were pretty good indicators that he was struggling with the step up. Who knows? He's still young and has time on his side but right now he's fifth choice here and doesn't look like he's going up the pecking order too fast.

I haven't written him off, but agree with sandman from what I have seen.

Agree with Sandman. He's shown raw potential, but no real finesse or clue what he's actually doing, despite a fair few sub appearances and a couple of starts (where he was really poor). What I've seen says League One player, with little chance of making it at this level.

Certainly without changing clubs and having a season or two of regular League One games. I don't think he's good enough to get the opportunities here to break through.

The bigger concern for me is who he might impress if he has a few good games and looks the part.

He won't want to be sat around here on the bench for too long and if other clubs see him perform well in a different environment at Leeds then he'll pick up some more admirers and we could rick losing him in the near future.

What a GREAT move for Reading. At the moment we have a young keeper who is stagnating in the Reading reserves, and another who is stagnating on the training pitch. At least now McCarthy can go and get experience; he'll make a few mistakes which we won't have to make for us and he'll either come back to challenge Federici stronger or will go for 10x the fee we would have got for him if he didn't go in the shop window.

Those saying 'why help out out a rival' your being short sighted; Leeds will get a good keeper even if they don't loan from us, why not Reading get some benefit out of it at the same time?!

Great move for McCarthy, great move for Andersen, great move for Reading.

Dont get me wrong, I want McCarthy to play for Reading soon, but this is a superb stop gap solution to the problem of having a talented young keeper without 1st team action in a suitable league. IMO we should be loaning Andersen to another Championship level club (here or abroad) and bring in an older keeper (Maik Taylor for example) on a short term contract to sit on the bench. If Federici gets injured we could call back whichever of McCarthy or Andersen was on the best of form.

I don't think its particularly naive to point out it could backfire. This is why its unusual to lend to a team in the same league, and very rare to lend to a team thats above you.

Also I don't think its a particularly unlikely possibility that we will rival for the playoffs, last season we got 77 points to their 72 points, making McCarthys run of clean sheets the difference (including man of the match performance at Elland Road)

Its a good point they might get a good keeper in anyway. But as they went for McCarthy hes the best they could get. Its quite hard to persuade clubs to lend anyone other than 3rd choice keepers so McCarthys calibre is probably higher than any others.

But lets give Hammond McDermott their due..looking at the fixture list we play them in 6 weeks time. If Lonergan doesn't make it we should win 5-0!

Oh and anyone ruling us out of the playoffs already has been in a coma and missed the last 2 years.
