Books are not convenient or practical in many scenarios, you also don't get much use out of them after the first time read.

:?:

Yes but that's actually not very close to...

melonhead its piojntless owning real books cos you only read them once anyway

But anyway, I LOVE my paperbacks and cannot throw them out even though I only ever read them once (which is daft really). I just accept the fact that books will soon be a thing of the past. Or at least become as rare as vinyl records. They'll have a place but most people won't buy them.

1. If we stop printing books, we stop planting trees. So much for the environmental argument then.

2. It makes no difference if a publisher / newspaper has it's own presses or not - if they have a business, they will require printing, which, last time I checked, is what printers f/cking do.

Printed media is still seen as a cost effective method of advertisement, and people still enjoy reading from tangible copy.

Like any other industry it's been hit hard and needs to change in the face of new technology, but it’s rather premature to declare the death of an entire sector because you can read Sunprick Richard Littlejohn’s tirade against homosexuals on your laptop and marvel at the latest 67 word ‘novel’ by Dan Brown on your iPhone.

mainly because when society collapses and we are all back living with no electricity, all the E-books in the world wont help us rebuild the world

I'm not convinced books will die out.

Vinyl got replaced by CDs because CD offered better quality. Downloads are hitting CDs because they are cheaper, and allow you to have a vast collection in one place.

It's not quite the same with books. A kindle offers no advantages over an actual book. It's not clearer to read (although you can read it in the dark). It can't reproduce the same picture quality of a book. It can't offer the same range of books (although that might change).

People tend to only read one book at a time, so there's no need for something to replace "carrying 100 books around with you" as nobody does that, nor feels any need to. At most they might take a few on holiday with them. Kindle would actually be great for travel books, but travel books aren't widely available on kindle.

What happens to your e-books if a kindle gets lost or damaged? Have you then lost all the books you bought, or does it work differently?

There is also the distinctly tactile preference of reading a book. A book is more than just a medium for imparting information. It is an object in itself. I may not be in the majority, but there's something that's just pleasing about opening a new book. It's part of the experience.

But only as a niche, not as a mass-market.

You just re-download them.

The thing is we are not talking about 5 years down the road here. I appreciate that some people's imagination won't run beyond that timescale (not pointing a finger at you there) but do you honestly believe that in say 100 years' time (if the HR is still around of course) people will be reading paperbacks?

Bank statements, letters, tax returns, newspapers and magazines, diaries, schoolwork - only 10 years ago all those were (almost) exclusively printed / distributed on paper but there is a very steady drift away from that.

Vinyl is of niche interest only, CDs will be disappearing soon - same will apply to paperbacks.

It's a shame, but it's progress. Of a kind. And the reaction to it is the same as it's been for any massive development / change in how we go about our daily lives. Some embrace it, others resent and resist it. For a while.

And for newspapers and magazines, where the costs of production and distribution are high but the content out of date very quickly, electronic distribution will only grow bigger and bigger.

Especially because the majority of these make money not by bringing news/views to consumers but by bringing consumers to advertisers - and the add-ons from the digital world of putting targeted advertising in front of consumers is irresistible.

It's hard to say as we don't know what technology will be around then.

If there's something that provides a better experience than a book, then it'll replace the book.

Bank statements, letters, tax returns, newspapers and magazines, diaries, schoolwork - only 10 years ago all those were (almost) exclusively printed / distributed on paper but there is a very steady drift away from that.

bank statement/forms etc aren't something that you sit down and read for pleasure.

Compared to letters, emails are just far more immediate, quicker to compose (and change if need be) and you can add attachments. Above all, email is free.

Newspapers are suffering because people no longer need papers to read the news. Few people read anything like as much online at a paper's site as they would if they bought the paper. People will sit and read a paper for an hour. Online, perhaps 5-10 minutes. And again, online sites are free. The Times apparently lost 90% of its readers when it decided to charge (but made more money out of the venture).

It won't be online versions of magazines that'll hit magazine sales, as given the choice between paying £3 to read something online, or paying £3 for an actual magazine, most would still plump for the magazine.

What'll hit them will be what magazine become once magazines realise that online they are no longer limited to a printed page. It's kind of like how early tv shows just replicated a theatre set until people realised how you could do things differently with tv, online magazine will improve as they become geared for online production, rather than just being PDF versions of printed magazines.

online text can also not be the clearest.

For example, what does Sergei keep doing with the termite toasties in the second paragraph?

Quite! Using serif fonts has always caused problems especially when at a low point. Reversed text just makes it worse 8)

The Chairman I believe is probably very happy at the moment as he is on holiday with his daughter in cuba for a couple of weeks. He was on the same flight as me and my dad on new years eve. I sat behind him and my dad next to him but with an aisle in between them. Surprisingly they where in economy, not just the club cutting their cloth, i guess Sir John is as well. Asked him if he would get the Ipswich result while we where flying and he asked the air hostess to get it for us. At this point we told him we where fans ex-season ticket holders as we'd moved away. Mid flight he gets the result through and tells us. He didn't know who'd scored. Left him alone for the majority of the flight then my dad asked him for his autograph for my mum, which he did. Then he chatted with my dad for about 30 mins about the club, his businesses, what my dad did as a job, what i did etc... Then we all chatted getting off the plane, baggage claim and while getting our money changed. Very weird experience and very surreal, but seemed like a nice bloke and offered us a discount at his hotel in the galapagos island. What was interesting was that when we landed they read out the Premier league scores and he reacted to them like a real fan of them game, for example when they read out Man Utd 2 Blackburn 3 he let out a yelp.

What's funny is that the Anderson contract signing was clearly done before he went away but there is no sign of the Mad man on the McCarthy photos.
