No Fixed Abode Does it annoy you that Reading are a selling club?

Reading investing their time in money in a player and as soon as a club comes in with a decent offer - you just know he'll be off. Can you see this ever changing as it must be a bit disheartening for you guys? The only way it will change is long term success in the Premier league or a very wealthy owner takes over from JM.

As Adam Federici said in the Summer, Reading are a stepping stone club to bigger and better things.

Typical new money football fan thinking that unless you have endless millions to keep someone at your club then something MUST be wrong

It does annoy me, yes. But i'm used to it now and have gone past the point of bothering about moaning too much about it. Yes i do still get worked up when i see my club sell players that would easily take us into higher positions / leagues but i think that's natural. I'm sure Newcastle were massively pissed off when Carroll was sold, same when Birmingham sold Roger Johnson and i dont hugely consider those selling clubs - it's just the way the game is now and frankly, im used to it

RoyalBlue Exactly and Watford have far more cause to have to be a selling club than we do. What's more I can't remember their Chairman giving all the big talk about genuine ambition to return to the PL or Chief Execs talking about them becoming the next Arsenal!

so we have too much ambition?

Really don't know why I biting on that ridiculous suggestion but for the hard of understanding: We talk far too much of ambition and do far to little to deliver on that talk. Of course, as they say, 'Talk is cheap', so we know why that might well be attractive to some at the club.

hilarious

i dont know whats wrong with saying wed like to stay in the premiere league and build the club up, and dont see it as clashing with still only spending money we actually have

Why does everyone else have more money than us? I reckon they might be cheating and using some sort of routine economic practice to support the club.

They bigged it up far more than that. And there is a massive disconnect between the two, which you seem incapable of spotting.

I can talk about genuine ambition to live in a massive mansion but when I walk into an estate agents in the South of England and tell them I'm only prepared to invest a couple of hundred K to realise that ambition, they will rightly laugh at me.

And that's before we even get onto the debate of whether we even spend the money we do have (to get that mansion I would need to take out a mortgage and get into some level of debt!).

they dont generally have more money than us, we probably bring in an average amount of money for the league, and spent an average amount on wages etc

they generally just spend money they dont have by borrowing it from/are given it from banks or rich benefactors who either dont mind throwing money away, or will want it back with profit at some future date

Rob-Royal we've been here a hundred times and you're boring me - face it, we sell our best players and will continue to do so until we get an owner with deeper pockets or wages come under control....Sig was still developing and needed to continue with that.

How Gibbs can call Watford a selling club is quite frankly laughable when his own employers do exactly the same.

.. and you accuse others of being boring?

Face it, we sell some, we buy some. We are successful in league terms. So we don't seem to have a serious problem at the moment - unless you are a shortsighted half wit of course?

Boring? I don't sit in the West Stand.......

We sell high and buy low, we are successful but with high risk attached as we rebuild every year, we don't seem to have a serious problem AT THE MOMENT (earlier in the season we certainly did and could easily go back there), our board are shortsighted half wits.....

you are misinterpreting the words ambition and aim imo

it is absolutely possible to have ambition to do all sorts of things.
these things may be long term, or short term
if they are long term- for instance; ambition to establish yourself as a premiere league club, you need to put things in place to make that possible and more likely

this doesnt mean suddenly spending loads of cash we dont have- as in the long term this may make it less likely that we will be an established prem club due to running up vast debts.

it could just as easily mean building the infrastructure of the club, buying players we can afford who we think may help us in our aims, building up an academy and its reputation in order to attract and keep the best youngsters at our club to supplement our purchases, raising the club profile through our success and the way our brand is seen.

in my career, i have ambition to be in a management role or a technical specialist. because i have not achieved this yet doesnt mean i dont have the ambition.
because i havent taken out a huge bank loan to buy qualifications, and pay an agent to tout my skills and abilitys round the industry does not mean the ambition doesnt exist, i am simplyu aiming to acgieve my ambition through hard work, and gaining experience

short sighted halfwits that sent us to the premiere league, keep us in the championship consistently challenging for repromotion, and have given us most of our best ever seasons over the time weve been in the new stadium

i'd rather have these short sight half wits than what Blackburn have at the moment, or plymouth had, or portsmouth, or leicester have had, or sheffield wednesday, or leeds, or palace.....

You forgot about the clubs that borrow it from the Bank of HMRC.

Certain people do something similar in GF and go off topic talking about Reading.

Extreme's.....there is middle ground, it doesn't have to be either or. There are many other clubs which are run well and don't advertise their best talent for sale. Some clubs work to keep their best players not nurture them for profit. Look at how hard Spurs fought to keep Modric and see how it is benefiting them now and all this with the player himself actually demanding to leave.

I firmly believe that but for the sale of Sig we would have been promoted. With further investment in the prem we would not have been relegated. The failure to keep Sidwell was the beginning of that ball rolling. It was clear the board were not able or willing to pay the necessary going rate to stay in the prem and it has snow balled since. The very fact that despite all those sales we have managed to stay competitive is a minor miracle and masks over the real issues and it is not sustainable. We had a glimpse of it earlier this season and it slowly turned around. Recent performances in the past few games are showing signs of that potentially coming back. McDermott continues to have us punch above our weight, this league is so tight that a few losses and you're suddenly looking over you shoulder just like a few wins and we're world beaters.

It is refreshing to know the education standards are still as low as the daily mail thinks they are (at least in Reading, anyway). Fortunately the board at RFC has a slightly longer term view than a short blip at the start of the season; too many boards would have removed (sorry this is HobNob 'would of removed') the manager rather than letting him do his job.

It had nothing to do with Spurs being well backed that they turned away Chelsea's money, it was about ambition and giving themselves the best chance this season and it's paying off. Modric wanted to leave, the transfer fee was irrelvant. Redknapp made it clear and was backed by his board to keep Modric at all costs. I can deal with players going onto better things, what I can't stomach are new contracts with minimum release clauses which get agents all excited......

Daily Mail?! LOL

Despite the losses earlier in the season I never once heard for McDermott's head nor would I want it! Christ, if that happened we would be well & truly fcuked! Read earlier post please.....
