Rumour - Michael Owen

by loyalroyal4life » 31 Jan 2012 17:29

According to TEAMtalk's Rumour Room: "Just been told by a friend of mine who works near Reading FC's training ground that Michael Owen has turned up there for a medical, would be interesting to see Roberts and Owen up front for the Royals."

Today's Sunday Times reports that Anton wants to get Owen in the summer.

Oh, and also Alexander Hleb

This is the kind of rumour (if true) that I find disturbing about wealthy owners, whose opinions can't be ignored for the obvious reasons, but Michael Owen?

Seriously, a wealthy and expensive, fragile, sick note, has been, who lives in the north west and likes to follow horse racing in a serious manner?

We can surely, and with all due respect to MO, do better for the future of our club than him?

It's not even as if he'd sell many shirts or put bums on seats in the way people like George Best and Rodney Marsh cameo's used to do in the twilight of their careers, is it?

Hleb was a fantastic player, not sure what he's like these days.

But I'd rather have Fletcher, Doyle, Long, Siggy, Defoe and a dozen others before Owen who WAS fantastic

Personally I think we should get Torres in for a month and let him score 8, get his confidence back

I can see the sense in bringing Owen in on loan to the end of the season, but no more than that.

are you kidding? Owen would sell a ton of shirts for the army of Liverpool/United fans that come out to the Madejski when we're in the Premier League or have a big game.

He's still capable of scoring goals it's just whether he could stay fit and if he's got the hunger. Certainly when he moved to United he said he was much happier being at Old Trafford and playing a few games rather than going to Stoke or Hull who made him offers.

Even if Wimb is right about shirt sales and I'm not so convinced, we shouldn't encourage the premier league part time plastic chameleon fans, not even for a revenue stream IMHO

But, (BIG BUT) if he should stay fit! you are 'aving a giraffe, he is an increasing liability on that front nothing could be more certain as he gets older.

The Brad Freidel's Ryan Giggs and Teddy Sheringham's of the football world are rarer than hen's teeth in reality!

Anton is probably convinced we are going to get promoted after looking at our league form ;)

I doubt we could get those players if we tried. We need to be focusing on up and comers still. Just a higher quality of up and comer.

Would be all over Hleb. Should think Owen will retire at the end of this season though, he's a broken man

I read the BBC gossip on this related to a Sunday Times article which I haven't read because I'm damned if I'm going to subscribe to read a Murdoch paper online. Frankly, I can't think of a single reason why signing Michael Owen is a good idea. If this is true I can only guess because the new owner thinks it would be interesting to have a glamour player at Reading. We have enough strikers and the team is balanced as it is (one of its strengths) - this would be precisely the kind of signing that would make me think having a new rich owner is a bad thing (which I don't). Up until now the signings of Roberts and Connelly have both proved to be inspired. That'll do for now.

To be honest Cywka has been pretty good in his cameos as well, but being in Australia, I guess it might be hard getting to Reading every saturday
