Murty retires

by jonboy29red » 21 Feb 2012 09:59

Former Reading captain Graeme Murty has announced his retirement from football.
Murty, 37, made 339 appearances for the Royals and led the side into the Premier League in 2005-06.
The defender, who began his career at York, was also capped four times by Scotland and ended his career with Southampton, playing nine times.
"It's been a hard decision but I've not been able to take up a level of fitness that I would be comfortable with," Murty told BBC Radio Berkshire.
sad day for him hope we offer him a job in the coaching set up

He announced his retirement on the day of the Hull game but because of all the takeover talk it was put aside for couple of weeks.

Sadly, a career blighted by injury. Signed as a winger wasn't he? I would be surprised if he played more than 20 times in that position. Not the best right back the club ever had but he had heart and determination in abundance. My abiding memory will be this...

Hope he gets to be a coach with RFC when the Academy set up gets overhauled.

Terminal Boardom Sadly, a career blighted by injury.

Really? I know he had an awful start to his Reading career but after he came back it didn't appear that he had lost anything. To go on and lead a team to a record second-tier points haul and 8th in the prem seems like a damn sucessful career to me. I would imagine the reason he ended up playing at right-back had little to do with his injuries and more to do with someone (Pardew?) identifying that it might be his best position. His subsequent career would suggest he wasn't far wrong.

Solid technique and defensive awareness, a cool head and great leadership qualities. Rarely let anyone down. Walks in to the Reading FC hall of fame.
