Your first ever away win

Would have been Brentford, early 80s, before going up to uni in't north (where my presence at away games subsequently proved to be not exactly inspiring to the team). Can recall a packed away end - specifically more packed than the Tilehurst End as I remembered - and a very different atmosphere to home games (well, d'uh). Can't recall the scorers but flowing scarves jammed into car windows on the way home and I was definitely going away again. Brentford away was always a great game - can recall a succession of tight, exciting games around that time and usually plenty of goals. Still have a soft spot for Brentford. Happy days. As will be Boro tomorrow.

First ever away game was Southampton in LC4 replay in 78/79 - lost 2-0 was age 14, Went to Aldershot and Bournemouth that season but both I think were draws.

So must be the Oxford League Cup game in Aug 1979 which we won 5-1 - and I think they scored first?

Was on one of the supporters coaches (one of the old Smiths ones) and it got a brick through the window.

I can't remember my first but two early ones that stick out were Crystal Palace in 95 with a spectacular Richard Shaw own goal, it really was a beauty - the other was at Wolves the next season when we got an absolutely pasting but won the game with a Jamie Lambert scuffed shot. Absolutely fantastic stuff.

Port Vale in 2001, I think. I'd witnessed a 2-1 defeat to Macclesfield in 1999 and saw a 1-0 win in my second away game, which wasn't actually very memorable.

With the threat of the merger, a lot of abuse was aimed at Maxwell and Waller, and a Kerry Dixon penalty won it for us, after someone had ran onto the pitch and booted the ball off the spot in front of a packed Manor Ground.

Went to three games that day.

Kitson scored a belter within seconds of the 2nd half starting, and Gylfi got on the scoresheet late on.

Hartlepool away. I travelled all the way up with my mate to watch us belt them 4-1.

Can't remember who scored but we met the players before kick-off, I think we got in the dressing room, got all the autographs and still have the programme with them all on it.

I had an away debut win, Portsmouth v Reading in '97 I think. Hodges and Williams got the goals in a 2-0 win. I don't think we have won at Portsmouth since!

Can't remember first win but one of my earlier games im sure was a 2-0 defeat to northampton. Couple of really lovely poachers goals from jamie forrester who stood in triumph gesturing towards the reading fans when he scored. Not a great day.

Also remember the 4-0 thumping from bristol city...scott murray scored and ran in front of us gesturing.

coming to think of it everyone likes gesturing at Reading fans when they score , also remember stuart barlow sticking his fingers up at us after scoring away at tranmere when we came back to draw 2-2.

I remember this one well, had got stuck in traffic getting to Ashton Gate, and their second goal went in before I'd sat down.

This was also my first away game. It was the last game before Christmas and I remember a lot of Christmas themed songs. There was quite a large following too, maybe around 2000? N Hunt scored a free kick and Doyle got the second. Can't remember who got the third.

That was my first "away win" too. I thought Terry Bell scored that day, though.

So many local derby wins on here I can remember - 5-1 at Oxford in 79 (they did score first) is still the biggest away win I've seen; we played them in the league about a month later and lost 4-0.

I've not gone to many away games but the only one I've gone to which we won was a friendly against Brentford, think it was like 4 or 5 -1 and there was a Brentford fan in the away end. gave a 'Brooker for England' shout to Paul Brooker as he warmed up near us, he didn't seem to take much notice. (Just to clarify I was never a part of the Paul Brooker fan club, the man was terrible)

!976/77 Oxford V Reading at the Manor Ground,Orange ball ....snow laded pitch and Robin Fridays last game for us..he strangely played for most of the second half with only one boot on!

I was at that one. But it was a one nil defeat. Last minute winner.



I agree with Wolsey, we seemed to win away so rarely in the 70's. My first was a 3-1 at Palace in about 1987, our train got ambushed on the way back.

Then another long wait, til 1994(?) with a 1-0 win at Roker Park, Scott Taylor scored.

My first ever away win was in 2003 away at wimbledon in pardew's last ever game as manager, it was the best game Shaun Goater ever played for us if I remember correctly.
To put this in context, my first ever away game was as a young lad was 1 April 1999 when we lost 2-1 to Gillingham when Carl Asaba played for them. Over the period between 1999 and 2003 I witnessed several losses and draws away from home but never a win, games that included, 4-0 against bristol city,a loss away at wolvesd in the playoffs, a draw at wigan in the playoffs, the playoff final itself, the draw at Brentford, 3-2 against notts county, 2-2 against Tranmere when we should of won to all but secure promotion before the brentford game, a 2-0 loss to notts forest. I finally thought I had broken my duck as we were 2-0 up at Hillsbrough against a poor Sheffield Wednesday only for them to win the game 3-2, a 3-0 loss to portsmouth.

I hadn't realised how much of a curse I had on the team in that period.
