I'm not sure if there is genuine evidence that it works or not, but I think they do so they can 'feel' the ball better.
I think quite a few footballers wear them too small.

1871 Royal Going slightly off of football but I know that Paul Collingwood uses a much heavier bat when batting in the nets before 20/20 games. Says it helps with his swing.

ZacNaloen That's for dexterity with regards to grip though, how much dexterity do you need for Football?
