Results locally this midweek

RTFC 1-2 Holyport - ended up at this - choice was restricted to staying very local - unfortunately due to horrendous traffic problems caused by tragic events down by the Junction earlier in the afternoon. :(
[NB Sad smiley for the event not my enforced trip to Scours]
- Town looked quite lively going forward early on but are an absolute mess at the back - took 'port quite a while to contain them but once they did and worked out the benefits of pressing forward there was only likely to be one winner. No Spence or Lewis in the squad again and Marcus only lumbered on for the last 10'.

highlights elsewhere on Tue :

B&B Sen Cup S-F:
Wycombe 4-0 Hungerford - other S-F is next Tue 28th (Chesham v Maidenhead)

SOUTHERN 1 Central:
Chertsey 0-2 Burnham
North Greenford 1-1 Marlow

SOUTHERN 1 S&W:
Abingdon Utd 0-2 Gosport B
Didcot 0-2 Halesowen

CCLP:
Camberley 1-0 Egham
Sandhurst 2-0 Mole Valley

HELLP:
Wok & Emm 3-0 Ab Town
Challenge (League) Cup Round 3 (last 16):
Fairford 1-3 Binfield
Highworth 3-2 Ardley

..ties still to be played in this round- Woodley host Shortwood this Sat PM and Witney play Nomads on Tue 3rd March.
.. other 4 sides through are Rayners Lane, Headington Amateurs, Lydney (all Div One) and Wok & Emm.

Will try and do a fuller w/e preview tomorrow BUT of interest to the Windsor chaps - Guildford City host Ash at the Spectrum this Friday night.

Frank Gray sacked at Basingstoke Town for those that missed it and replaced by Town legend Jason Bristow. Final push for play offs on the cards?

Winchester City 5-1 Newport (IOW)

Fleet Spurs 2-1 Cowes Sports

... did get to Communication Park for a disappointing 1-1 draw between Daventry Town and Sluff - big Lloyd (Owusu) was used a lot as a target man and scored early 2nd half. Pitch very rutted and bobbly didn't help either side - Slough pressed hard late on but will see this as 2 points dropped, as St Neots win comfortably away and pull clear at the top. Slough - not unlike another Berks outfit :? - tend to fare badly in the play offs so will want to go up in auto - crucial game at St Neots on the 10th March. ref played an unbelievable amount of injury time - match finished about 16:58 ish.

It was indeed disappointing - Slough weren't at the races 1st half, and the penalty summed it up when Burnell's poor shot was saved, and Coyne smashed the rebound over the bar. 2nd half Slough were much better, and really should have put the game to bed, although Warro pulled off a blinding save near the end to keep it 1-1. I heard the ref say to the lino that there would be 6 minutes injury time, but I reckon there were at least 8. Lovely ground, nice bar, friendly people, (another) pudding of a pitch. Still, as it was Christof Jnr's 1st non-league away game it wasn't a bad introduction, and he hasn't been sitting in the corner rocking backwards and forwards tonight...

Out of interest Four Of Clubs, what did you think of Slough compared to your expectations? I think that they have some very tidy players, and when they try and pass it around they are much more effective than when hoofing it, despite their size.

Frank Gray was heavily backed by the chairman and despite a good start has been pretty poor in the main and it was time to go.

3-1 win today for the Dragons. A season ticket holder friend of mine, had a good day. She met Sergio Torres, had lunch with the chairman and gave the man of the match award!

... only the 2nd time I've seen Sluff this season and they weren't a patch on their previous standard - mind you the pitches were &^%$ in both cases - 1st game had been the very- nearly-postponed Cup Tie at Holloways Pk vs the Moles last Sept.

... perhaps the difference in styles (as opposed to standards) of the respective opponents was significant. Binfield were a quick passing side that seek to play through to their front men - wasn't really clear what kind of method Daventry used other than dead-ball stuff and scrambles in the box.

I can only assume the surface was to blame - as I said Daventry weren't much but you could see they were desperate to stop their horrendous losing streak - at one point late on they won a corner but still kept a back four-in a line on half-way marking one (small) Rebel forward. :|

Not sure getting in big-LLoyd has actually helped Slough's cause - sure it gives them something different and he certainly brings a bit of experience back with him - but it seems to shackle them into playing too much long ball - when they have two very good wide men.

Might try and get to a couple more Rebel games before the season's end but I hope yesterday wasn't the start of their season fizzling out - my impression was of a side that had started to run out of ideas.

As an aside - spending too much time on NL forums as I do - the general feel is that the Southern League is an awful standard of football - well coached and good enough to produce well organized even stifling defence/midfields but poor going forward with few exceptions. match reports in the main seem to emphasize how sterile football is in these leagues - can't say any of the half a doz. matches I been too this season, depart much from this view either.

... personally I'm not convinced this can't be levelled at the Ryman as well. It does seem that clubs dropping down from STEP02 or coming up from STEP05 don't spend long at these levels - this season a lot of the newer sides seem to be flourishing (Leiston, Needham, St Neots, Lowestoft, Bury, Hythe, AFC Totton, Poole)

Glad to hear your lad enjoyed the game - took my eldest to his first game at Krooner Pk Camberley when he was 6 or 7 - was an absolute snorefest and I was sure I'd put him off but he sat enthralled throughout and has clocked up almost 150 grounds with me (he's nearly 15 now and often has other interests that use up his Saturday's - should have been in Guernsey this w/e ringing bells but couldn't get there due to the Fog - so came with us)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PS last evening's result from CCL1
Guernsey 2-1 Souh Kilburn - finally got it on at 19:00h
I think Bracknell were actually winning with 2 minutes to go. They certainly lost the game in the last minute.
Gutted. 2-0 and 3-1 up in the first half. Great chance to go 4-1 up then the officials got involved. I thought the quality of officiating in the CCL was poor but the numpties who get the gigs in the Senior Trophy are just the pits. Have to say that Abingdon Town's ground is certainly amongst the best I have visited this season.
Tomorrow's NL action involving 'local' sides:
... though here's the FA Vase Q-F ties first-
Saturday 3rd March
FA Vase 5th Round Quarter Finals
1 Shortwood United v Herne Bay
2 Staveley MW v St Ives Town
3 Peterborough Northern Star v Dunston UTS
4 Bournemouth v West Auckland Town
CONFS
Chelmsford v Hampton & Richmond
Eastleigh v Farnborough
Havant and W v Boreham Wood
Salisbury v Dover
Staines Town v Basingstoke
Thurrock v Sutton Utd
Tonbridge Angels v Dartford
Truro City v Eastbourne Borough
Welling v Bromley
Weston-S-Mare v Dorchester
Woking v Maidenhead Utd - Magpies have taken striker Charlie Strutton on short-term loan from AFC Wimbledon - this chap has been top scorer for Chalfont St Peter for a couple of season's (though only 22) and was only signed by AFCW today, after impressing in a 3 week trial - he has 13 goals already at Step04 this season. 'Cards' will want to avenge the 4-1 drubbing they took in the FA Cup.
ISTH1S
Faversham Town v Godalming Town
SOUTHP
Chesham United v Bashley
SOUTH1C
AFC Hayes v Ashford Town (Middx)
Barton Rovers v Uxbridge
Bedfont Town v Burnham
Bedworth United v Aylesbury
Chalfont St. Peter v North Greenford United
Chertsey Town v Beaconsfield SYCOB
Fleet Town v Marlow
Slough Town v Northwood
SOUTH1S&W
Hungerford Town v Stourport Swifts
Sholing v Didcot Town
Thatcham Town v Abingdon United
CCLP
Badshot Lea v Chessington & Hook United
Camberley Town v Dorking
Croydon v Banstead Athletic
Egham Town v Horley Town
Farnham Town v South Park
Hanworth Villa v Epsom & Ewell
Molesey v Cove
Raynes Park Vale v Mole Valley SCR
Wembley v Ash United
Windsor v Sandhurst Town - don't want to jinx anything but can't really see beyond a straightforward home win here - 'Fizzers' have one of the most porous defences in the division - and Windsor will want to try and keep Guildford in sight if possible.
.. no game for the leaders (Guildford) this w/e – saw them put 5 past Cove on Wed @ The Spectrum – they looked several classes above their visitors – easy to see why they have built up such a big league at the top. Notched their 100th league goal of the season too.
CCL1
Bedfont Sports v Eversley
Bookham v Knaphill
Cobham v Frimley Green
Farleigh Rovers v Worcester Park
Guernsey v CB Hounslow United (3.00 p.m.)
South Kilburn v Spelthorne Sports
Staines Lammas v Sheerwater
Warlingham v Hartley Wintney
Westfield v Feltham
HELLP
Abingdon Town v Flackwell Heath
Ascot United v Fairford Town
Cheltenham Saracens v Ardley United
Henley Town v Wantage Town - saw Henley win very comfortably with only 10 men vs Witney on Tue - will want to pull further away from the bottom 3/4 up against last years Champions who now are a very pale and sad shadow of their title winning side.
Oxford City Nomads v Highworth Town
Shrivenham v Holyport
Slimbridge v Bracknell Town
Witney Town v Thame United
Wokingham & Emmbrook v Kidlington
- no matches for RTFC or Binfield this w/e
HELL1E
Lambourn Sports v Rayners Lane
Newbury v Letcombe
WESSP
Winchester City v New Milton Town
WESS1
Fleet Spurs v AFC Portchester
Whitchurch United v Petersfield Town
No game for Tadley this w/e
... another snippet of news from the FA site - Dee Roads' conquerors in the national FA Sunday Cup have been summarily turfed out at the Semi-Final stage for repeated infringements of rules relating to player eligibility - it is suspected they have done this throughout the tournement and have now received a 6 year ban from entering the FA Sunday Cup. :o
... not sure where we are bound tomorrow - mate will probably want SSMP Haringey Boro vs Aylesbury Utd - might be OK since Spuds aren't at home (their ground Coles Park - is actually on White Hart Lane)
.. my eldest Lad has suggested SOUTH1C Woodford Utd v Biggleswade Town - Woodford play in Woodford Halse a small village NE of Banbury.
