Wycombe Royal Yet again you are ignoring the "mental" side of the game just because it can't be quantified by facts.

That looks pretty specific to me. And wrong.

Ian Royal
There is no contradiction there. Given it's pretty clear no one agrees with your choice, and most think it makes you an idiot, why do you keep sharing?

Well it would take a small degree of intellect for you to see the problem.

Ah.

Meanwhile:

Over the last 5.7 Seasons of Championship football 85% of penalties were scored.

Like I have said before there is always one common denominator. You have to ask yourself why.

Snowball But what you never try to do is BUILD, to make things better

I try to do this by helping you understand your multiple errors and repeated logic flaws so that we have a set of conherent statistics that might mean something and which we can enjoy discussing as fans.

Bit of a tough job so far and i've copped a lot of personal abuse for it but i'll persevere.

Might well do that.

Prolly begin with the league table, move on to goals scored, take it from there really.

tbf your genuine stats (by this I mean the ones that are actual facts like minutes played, goals scored, and the like) are a useful starting point for discussion and fair play for taking the time to compile them.

It's the subjective nonsense like half-assists and awarding random points for various things that have no scientific value. Likewise slicing handpicked subsets of data to back-up a preconceived viewpoint is just poor methodology as any scientist could tell you.

Not really. Just wondering why you wouldn't answer. All these things you accuse others of being are things which you are yourself.

Funny that, but the only one who can't see it is you. I shall say no more on the matter and I'll leave it for you to have the last word, like you always have to.

Controversial. If I did that some oxf*rd would say why didn't I pick 19XX when we had our lowest total.

Genuine question - where did you get that statistic from?

The only stat I have managed to find on the conversion rates of penalties is for the Premier League; over the last 10 seasons (including the current season) 878 penalties have been awarded, with 694 of them being scored - a conversion rate of 79%.

It would be interesting to see the stats database that you are working with.

Wycombe, I'm not sure our previous record does really come into it for anything other than a general indication of the mental strength of the sort of squad Reading puts together. Only two of our 5 play off campaigns have been in the last 5 years and there's virtually no one left from the first team squad for the the season we played Burnley. Karacan, arguably Federici... that's about it.

I'd say that our experience in the Play offs last season, actually stands us in pretty good stead for having the mental strength to do better this time around. Most of our squad actually has experience of playing in that sort of game now, which will help IMO.

It isn't just about players. There are the fans, coaches, managament, Chairman, etc. All have long memories that will affect the mentality around the club.

It like clubs having bogey teams, no one knows why, but nearly every team has one.

Smack on. What do people say about small samples?

With so few POs involved the idea of choking can't truly be tested.

Just off to Uni now but Ian Royal posted a URL yesterday
of all championship games, and below is that data

Pen-Gol-Miss-%
070 054 16 0.77 2011-12
157 138 19 0.88 2010-11
124 103 21 0.83 2009-10
142 113 29 0.80 2008-09
105 097 08 0.92 2007-08
040 035 05 0.88 2006-07

638 540 098 0.85 OVERALL (5 Seasons plus 33 Games)

92% Scored
88% Scored
88% Scored
83% Scored
80% Scored

and this season, so far, 77%, but perhaps a
higher percentage go in in the last third of the season

Here it is, Angry

He cheats a bit saying 84%. It's 84.64% which round up to 85%

Without this incomplete season, that is for the

5 most recent whole Championship seasons it's 86% (85.56%)

Ian Royal Still got the figures written down by my desk. 78%.
PL: 79%
Chump: 84%
L1: 75%
L2: 74%

For some reason very few pens given in League two comparatively. Half L1 or Chump.

http://www.football-lineups.com/tourn/The_Championship_2010-2011/Stats/Penalties/ very handy website.

I'm guessing that Premiership keepers are better and that their extra quality
shows more than the extra quality of penalty-takers?

Also they have more and more detailed TV coverage and are very
heavily researched?

Snowball THIS

In association football, an assist is a contribution by a player which helps to score a goal.
Most commonly, an assist is credited to a player for passing or crossing the ball to the scorer. It may also be awarded to a player whose shot rebounds (off a defender, goalkeeper or goalpost) to a teammate who scores; or to a player who wins a penalty kick for another player to convert. An attacking player may be awarded an assist for contributing to an own goal.[1] Players cannot be awarded an assist for a goal they themselves score. Usually one but a maximum of two players can be awarded assists per goal.

contains a contradiction

It says a player gets an assist for winning a pen, but then argues that if he TAKES the pen and scores, he then doesn't get the assist.Unless, of course, it means winning a penalty is in and of itself, an assist.

and, to repeat, I award a "major contribution" for WINNING a penalty
irrespective of what happens WITH the penalty.

I expect the reason to be beyond a lot of people, and that feels fine,
especially when the usual suspects keep rattling their empty vessels
and making lots of noise.

Ok, I'll spell it out, what part of "wins a penalty kick for another player to convert" do you not understand?

Your second highlighted section merely points out that a player cannot be credited with assisting himself in scoring a goal, e.g. he takes a shot, it hits a defender and comes back to him and he scores. This is not credited as an assist whereas if the rebound fell to someone else, it would. Exactly the same rules as applied in a stats obsessive sport like ice hockey. It's a universal, standardised application of the definition of an assist used in sports statistics that has been adopted as an official measure, unlike yours.

No contradiction, just a lack of comprehension.
