They've done exactly what they wanted to in the Europa League - they've got out of it.

The 1st 4 in La Liga would beat England's 1st 11.

British football is at an all time low, the teams really are mediocre standard. United in the last few years after Ronaldo left over-achieved big time now they are performing like a lot of people expected. Arsenal aren't good enough, chelsea aren't good enough and Man City who have by far the best squad were utter dump in Europe and have poor consistency. Utd are the real fall from grace though, they've been the kings for years and haven't bought a world class/top european player for how long now?

Not in this years Champions League where both City and Chelsea were clear winners over their La Liga opposition.

That's not to say Utd haven't been resoundly beaten of course, or that the quality and consistency of the top teams in the Premier League hasn't left a lot to be desired too.

I do think there's an element of motivation in Utd's downfall in this tie. I don't think there can be much doubt that the Europa Cup, and the chance to knock out Utd, is more important to Athletico than it is Utd.

Well, I watched one team totally outclass the other. Motivation had nothing to do with that.

Exactly, lol at putting it down to motivation. Who turns up not arsed in front of a crowd of 40,000 supports bouncing around in europe. In the big picture, sure, Man Utd don't care as much but on the night football is played then and there and you go out to win. Bilbao are a team with momentum with 1/2 good individuals and they played as a good technical, functional unit. Man Utd are just a disjointed team on the decline whose quality now is as as low as its been at least in my life time. I don't dislike man Utd I respect them massively and they have produced stunning football over the years, but if they doing invest ehavily in the summer than itll be the same again next year... traditionally smaller clubs going there and outplaying them knocking them out again.

And when Crystal Palace outclassed United in the Calling Cup i suppose motivation had nothing to do with that?

We're Manchester United and we lose when we want. No question about that?

They were outclassed yes, but I think it's a bit naive to think that motivation was a factor to some degree.

Man Utd can't seem to defend this season (no Vidic and no central midfield has hit them hard and made life difficult for the new lad in goal) and Athletico put them to the sword because of it. They looked a very good side over the two legs but I doubt they manage to put performances like that in every week (motivation/quality to do it week in week out at their young ages).

I wouldn't know as I didn't see that game.

Was lack of motivation to blame when Barcelona outclassed Man Utd last year? It was exactly the same sort of game last night - Man Utd running around chasing shadows with a panic stricken look on the faces.

I think it's time you mentioned Arsenal now.

Barca outclassed us. No questions.

But last night United showed no urgency, left players at home and were half arsed.

Would have been much different if it was the champions league that Im sure.

Underdog in upping their game for their cup final stock.

Didn't see it but I've watched Man Utd quite a bit this season and they are a bit rubbish. By far their worst squad of players for absolute yonks yet they still may well win the league #bestleagueintheworld :|
