Rivals to the "106" team?

by strap » 01 Apr 2012 11:20

Our last 20 league games have resulted in an incredible record of

P20 W16 D1 L3 F37 D14 Pts49 GD+23

Whilst I appreciate that "if my aunty had had balls she'd have been my uncle", thought it worth mentioning that had we kept this level if success up for a full season, our finishing record would have been

P46 W37 D2 L7 F85 A32 Pts113 GD+53

I'll get my coat ...

I started a thread a week or so ago where I noted a number of similarities.

Just shows that this is a pretty special squad imho.

I've been thinking about a comparison of squad as follws:

Goalkeeper : Not much to choose between Marcus then and Feds now

Centre Backs : I never thought I'd see the day, but Kaspars & Pearce must rate very close to Sonkimarson. Again, not much to choose.

Full Backs : Much as I love the delivery from Harte, and Shaun has come on a load this season, they don't match up to Murts and Shorey. 1-0 to 05/06.

Centre Midfield : Legs and Jem have been tremendous, but I can't quite see them matching the partnership of Sids and Harps. 2-0 to 05/06

Wingers : Errr, the easiest section of the lot. Even the mercurial Kebster is no match for Convey and LIttle. 3-0 to 05/06

Strikers : Since the arrival of JR we've looked almost unstoppable up front - a feeling we had for 45 of 46 games last time. 4-0 to 05/06

Subs : Oster, Hunt, Bryn, Makin vs HRK, Griff, Mills, Tabb - neither that great so little to choose between them

Manager : Bald, unassuming, focused, calm - could be either of them - nothing to choose except that Brian seems to have done it from a seriously lower base in that he lost his best player and captain and still has us up there. As I thin SSC walks on water, incredibly this is one back for the currents. 4-1 to 05/06

The better question is, how do you think our current squad would have done in 05/06, and vise versa

SSC can't have done it from a lower base. If we are saying Roberts has changed our season then McD has somthing SSC never had. Money.

£1m on Lita says otherwise

I think I said that BMcD has done it from a lower base.

I give you the £1m spent on Leroy before the season even started. That's £500k more than BMcD spent on Roberts.

You could argue that BMcD spent £900k on Kaspars, but that was less than 20% of the cash received for what should have been one of our two best players.

Out of interest the lads on the Royals Post Podcast discussed this just the other week, well worth a listen if you haven't already.

For my money if I was building a team from the two (based on just those seasons)

Federici

Shorey
Gorkss
Pearce
Murty

Convey
Sidwell
Leigertwood
Little

Kitson
Doyle

Bench: Roberts, Kebe, Ivar, Hahnemann, Karacan

Roberts comes very close.

OK, I'll accept I don't know for sure, but why do you think it was £1m ?

the 2011/2012 crop can only be considered rivals to the 106 IF - IF - we get promotion.

And we have 6 difficult games to go still.

Back down to earth people please.

In the name of nostalgia I got watchin' the DVD today of our record breaking season. Brilliant scenes, and still feel that we are developing something special here and now.

Particularly liked the bit where Murts scored the pen and then goes legging it after Kingsley. Not sure who the bloke was in that gear but once Murts took him down and then the rest of the team launched on top of him  Fair play mate.

The next time that we saw the bloke beneath the Kingsley fancy dress....he was one-field for the Royals at Bromley (where incidently, Feds scored the first of his two Reading goals).

Selby Armstrong wasn't it?........now first team kit manager

SSC did have money and was never under any pressure to sell - look what McD has had to sell compared to SSC

There's a lot of... ahem... talent to choose from. I realise the team won't be to everyone's tastes, especially with Convey no where. But I like it.

A Sidwell & Karacan partnership would ave been my preference.
