Royal Rother Even the Liverpool fans are starting to see it now...
http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/ind ... 85253.1880I wonder if Gerrard looks at Paul Scholes and thinks 'that could me in five years time'? If he does he's deluded. Scholes can be harried and made to suffer these days. We know that. But watch him pick a pass. He's right every time. He has a vision of what a simple pass will do to the rest of the pitch. Or if not a simple pass, then a sequence of simple passes, which is why he often follows his own passes so that he's in a position to get a return and put in the next pass of the sequence before the opposition has had time to properly adjust.
Gerrard couldn't do this in a thousand years because he doesn't think like Scholes. When he plays in central midfield he drops deeper than Scholes ever would in order to pick the ball off the toes of the central defender, he likes more time on the ball than Scholes before delivering a pass, and his first instinct is to solve the problem in one single blow. That often means the long pass. And, I'm afraid to say, when he delivers a square pass it's often a stupid one. Unlike Scholes who usually tips the whole pitch to his team's advantage when he goes square.Gerrard is not, has not and never will be a CM. His best football is played higher up the pitch or on the right and he lack the game intelligence and discipline to do what Lucas does. This is not a criticism, each to their own and all that.
Bar Everton, his best performance since his return was Newcastle at Anfield in December, when he introduced as an impact sub - which, as someone earlier pointed out, is what another Scottish manager does with older players. He would be a bigger benefit to the team for the last half hour of games on the right or behind the striker.
Yeah, he's been a decent attacking midfielder in his day but world class? Never was anywhere close to it and at just 31 he's reduced to being, at best, an impact sub in his own fans' eyes.... and that for the team currently sitting 8th in the PL.
Blimey RR you're working hard today trawling other clubs' websites to eventually come up with somebody who loves Paul Scholes.
"World class" is another argument altogether as IMHO we just don't have world class players in England so it is trite to bring up whether or not he is world class.
As far as midfielders go that are English I feel in my lifetime there have only been Gascoigne,Currie,Hoddle and Gerrard that might be considered as top class and at a push "world class".
I am far from being alone in considering Gerrard to be a bit special-just listen to the possible next England manager 'arry eulogising about the player as well as all the ex-players that we see on our TV.
You are fully entitled to your opinion but are way out of line with the majority within football and I find it a bit sad that you felt that you had to seek out minority opinions from other football fans to substantiate your opinion.
A further different argument would be over whether he is still a top player and if the injuries have reduced his effectiveness but to deride his past performances is frankly pathetic. and more in keeping with our Chelsea and Man Utd worshippers.
