Classic away performance, sit back, let them have the ball and counter them.
But its the little touches of McDermott magic - like letting Chaplow free but not Lallana, letting Sharp roam but keeping tabs on Lambert. He is a genius.
ALF is the new Cureton but better. As McD apparently told him when he came on, he was born to score goals.

Back in safe deep in millwall country.
This game summed us in the last 16 games all over, sit back then break while taking the few chances we make. Saints looked pretty good, outrageously confident on the ball all the way back to their keeper who sprayed the ball to the wings at every opportunity. This balanced nicely against our self belief in defence, camping deep when in front and absorbing. They had countless crosses, always to the back post where Lambert always seemed to nudge the full back out of the way.
Yes he scores a lot, but he wastes a lot too. I'd much rather 2 shot 2 goal alfie on tonights performance.
Player ratings
Feds - 8 solid with a couple of great saves, but generally had to deal with tame shots. No chance with the deflection/bounce for their goal.
Harte - 8 strong against chaplow and not exploited by the sub winger. Good deliveries as always.
Cummings - 9 has been getting better and better in the last few games. Great clearing headers from the back post
Pearce - 8 strong and clever defending, never lunged or dived in and good in the air against a big team.
Gorkss - 8 calm when under pressure, at one point took the ball down out of the air and set up a break brilliantly.
Mullins - 7 better than I expected, broke up quite a lot of play and tidy in possession.
Tabb - 7 a little dynamo in midfield but overrun at times by their flowing midfield.
Jobi - 8 captains performance, really looked up for it tonight.
Kebe - 7 did what he wanted to, rocked up with 2 assists the first out of nowhere.
Nhunt - 8 good in the air, even against fonte. Nice involvement in build up play.
Roberts - 9 fantastic bullet of a header, some gorgeous touches. Unlucky twice not to win free kicks from arguably the last man (havent seen replays yet)
Alfie - 9 2 sniffs 2 goals
Adobe - 7 good pace and closing down
Fans - 9 good singing and generally a decent level of drunkness.
Highlight of the day - silencing the saints fans with top of the league songs
Lowlight - winging passengers on the train home, flinching at every song. Probably the best quote is "i hope to God they don't go up". To be fair though he was a clown and despite moaning about the passengers not having peace he managed to shout down the phone for a good 15 minutes about his umbrella.

I drove home very carefully just in case!!!
So, yet again, up go the cries of "lucky" Reading beating a team who were better than us to win our 14th game in 16. I'm really starting to question the judgement of many so called professional observers.
Yes, Southampton were on top for much of the game but, yet again, we buried all our strikes on target to take all 3pts. To me, this highlights the one asset "professional" observers claim we lack but West Ham and Southampton, apparently, have in abundance ............................quality
"Quality" barely does justice to Kebe's cross for Roberts opener.............................try making a note of any better ones on MOTD.
As Brian said, there was quality in all 3 goals. Perhaps it time for all of us to re-assess just how well this current squad might perform in the top flight with 3 or 4 additions.
I never thought I'd see another season to compare with Coppell's brace but, baring melt down over the next 3 games, this one must be a worthy contender.

Spent 5 minutes just staring at the table and smiling. 
Watched the game again twice as soon as I got back from hospital. Bloody 3 connection too slow to watch live on Sky Go, so had to make do with 5 Live "commentary".
Two things struck me. Despite the 5 Live commentators ability to make Soton seem like Barcelona, Adam Federici didn't really have to work that hard. Yes, Soton had plenty of shots, but I can only remember two saves that were other than routine. The first was a typical Fed "for the camera" swoop to catch a header, the second a backpeddle to tip a Llanna cross over the bar. Other than that, Soton didn't have that many dangerous shots on target .... did they? Maybe Feds is just so good at positioning now that he makes just about all saves look routine!
And secondly, yet again, an opposing manager says they "gifted" us all three, (oxf*rd THREE, count them you pcunt Adkins!), of our goals!!! I mean, according to Fat Sam the Sham gifted us all 7 we have scored against them this season, Warnock's mob "gifted" us the two we scored against them at the MadStad, and the Brighton goal was a wicked lucky deflection, etc, etc, etc. This is REALLY starting to irritate the oxf*rd out of me.
Other than that, LOVED our spirit, intensity, and never say die attitude!!
Oh, and BTW, had Lambert's shot not taken a deflection off Gorkss, Fed would have saved their goal.

Southampton frequently had to pass sideways / backwards because we had closed down the midfield options. Southampton are a good side and will retain possession rather than risk passing into trouble. The fact that they adapted their game to bypass Tabb/Mullins was a real compliment to those players.

I agree with that. More so in the 2nd half. Funnily enough Saints scoring seemed to galvinise us. McDermotts substitution showed exactly why we've drawn so few games and won so many. He's a genius!
