Greatest Comeback?

by Ups and Downs » 19 Apr 2012 20:24

It's been well publicised how we managed to claw our way back from a ropey position in November to win automatic promotion, but is it the greatest comeback in the history of English football?

I remember Crystal Palace being in the relegation zone at Christmas and then coming back to 6th place and going on to win the playoffs, but ours is surely a greater achievement and therefore the Greatest Comeback In English Football History.

Right?

I'd have said that 21st to 9th is a better come back than this so it has to be Palace all the way.

Nod to Millwall (I think?) for the worst capitulation. Were they top about midway one year and got relegated? Or am I just making stuff up now?

Palace got 73 points in total that year. I don't know how many they had on Christmas day. If we knew that then we could get all mathematical and work this shit out.

That millwall collapse doesn't even sound possible.

22 points after 22 games I think.

So that's 51 points from 72

For Millwall, may well have mis remembered / invented it. But in '95 they had 32 points after 16 games (34 after 18) which is title form. And finished 22nd on 52.

That's 20 points in 30 games   Still more than Derby got in the Prem. And more than Sunderland managed there twice.

Win our last two and we will have 58 points for the second half (we were 36 points after game 23 and we were only 27 points after game 20). That would be 67 from a possible 78 in the last 26 games of this season.

In my book that means that our acheivemnt is even greater than the Palace one.

Yeah, it's fair enough points wise. It just seems a bit different going from relegation zone to promoted.

I definitely recall that happening - late 90s/early 00s

Ha ha! Was there any reason for the collapse? A change of manager? Sale of a player?

No idea, I was a clueless 14 year old in his first full season as a Reading fan back then.

Just read that wiki link, it was after McCarthy left to manage Ireland. Quite a bizarre thing to happen really, though it couldn't happen to a nicer team.

Didn't Sunderland go up after a chronic start and then blitzed the division?

Yep. Sunderland lost their first four games one year and then came top as I remember.

Last twenty games of the year - 16 wins 3 draws 1 loss

If we win our last two then we beat that!

I may be wrong but i think it went like this......
Old 1st Division (Premier league) Christmas 1981. Manchester City top, Liverpool 12th
End of that season; Liverpool champions, Manchester City 12th.
As i said, i think thats how it was.
