Game of the season

by M-U-R-T-Y » 22 Apr 2012 17:50

With the league done and dusted and the final game academic, I thought I'd start this thread now. I'm compiled a list of key results and put them into a poll - vote for the game you think was the performance/result of the season.

Probably a two horse race here between West Ham and Southampton away, but I've included others that were important too.

It's West Ham away for me. The game that saw us promoted, not mathematically, all but - cracking day out too. Amazing result, and the cheek of little old Reading going to the Sham and putting in a performance like that against the world cup winners!

I remember leaving the ground and thinking "this is our season".

However there is a lot to say about the other games on the list too.

What do you think?

Peterborough 3-1 Reading

Sounds absolutely ridiculous, ludicrous I know. But that was such a poor performance, up against a 'Boro side who played some fantastic football in parts. I think that result was pivotal in bringing the team back down to Earth after what had been a fantastic run of results.

I also think the fans were fantastic after it too. Even though it was a long old trip on a Tuesday night, and even though it was the first defeat for ten games, the majority of those who travelled stayed behind to applaud the players off, chant and sing "Eieieio". I can only imagine that would got through to the players that the fans are fully behind them.

So yeah, a defeat but a significant point in Reading's season. Much like the defeat to Luton in the 05/06 season.

Outside of the obv choices of WHU away and Saints away, when we beat Barnsley 4-0 at their place I know we had a special squad and that good things were coming.

Tuesday night was a brilliant experience, and Leeds has a certain dirty attraction, but I loved the West Ham home game: we were taking the piss before Kebe pulled his socks up.

Southampton away for what happened on the pitch and off the pitch. The support was immense that night, the concourse continued the party. The pre match drinks in the pub settled the nerves and the stewards were top notch. I couldn't complain about one aspect of the night out except i was supposed to be in the midlands that night but skipped it.

Doing the double over Burnley was a sweet moment.

Very good perspective and I hadn't thought of that. I went to the game and looking back it was indicative of the spirit of this season in spite of defeat.

Has to be West Ham away. Those 2 minutes before half time were the best 2 minutes of the season imho. Plus the half time 'fracas' in the concourse - amazing!!

BC away - 2-0 down and then coming back to win 2-3 - that has to have been the turning point of the season?

Utterly lost amidst the celebrations --I've seen no mention of it anywhere, so I'm not just picking on this phred-- but this one was immense at the time, coming as it did after a spell of three points won from the preceding four and against quality opposition on fire at the time

Followed it up with a defeat, but it did stop the bleeding and correct the course, and states its own case within the grand context as the turning point

Saint and West Ham both away. Nothing will top that for a very long time, well
at least to October when we turn Man Utd away from home over.

The result, determination and atmosphere make those 2 games a real stand out. So pleased to of been there.

Millwall away was the best game for me, sums up our season as a whole started poorly then battled back only for Le Fondre to get the winner. Good atmosphere as well coupled with standing throughout.

West Ham away.

Insane atmosphere even at half-time, that was the day (amongst many days) we knew we were witnessing something special.

I voted Leeds purely for how satisfying the victory was. It would have felt like an injustice of some sort had we not won it - a proper battle between good and evil.

I think Watford (A) deserves a honourable mention.
