Hoop Blah Before Woy took over, the Swiss national team hadn't qualified for a World Cup in 6 attempts (from '66 through to '90). He got them into the '94 tournament on the back of one defeat (away to Portugal, they beat and drew against the Italians).

They'd never qualified for a Euro's in their history. Under Woy they qualified comfortably at the top of their group, having lost just one game (away to Turkey). He left before the tournament to take over Inter Milan though and they finished bottom of Englands Group, losing 2 and drawing one (against England obviously).

I think that looks like a decent record and the result of good management.

The distant past is the distant past. So would you have McGhee back as Reading manager?

McGhee has pretty much consistently failed since then. Hodgson has largely been a success, barring a couple of exceptions like Liverpool of course, and has had another successful stint at international level as well (Finland, although you could say UAE wasn't a success, but I think that would be unfair considering the resources available).

The Swiss job is probably the best yardstick for this job and so perhaps a bit more relevant don't you think?

facaldaqui My guess is that far from dropping Lampard Hodgson will select him. They seem made for each other.

Why?
Hodgson seems to prefer hard working industrious midfielders, such as Paul Ince and Javier Zanetti, more recently look at his central midfield signings for WBA.
They're all that type of midfielder.
He might prefer to pick players like Barry.

No one is more industrious than Lampard. I'm with those who'd like to see Lampard set aside, but if you'd like bet of whatever a Norwegian fiver is on whether Hodgson picks Lampo or not, put your hand here.

Ok, how about Finland? Not so distant past. He had them competing with the bigger nations and almost qualifying for tournaments. How about that? FINLAND ffs, do you have any idea of how limited the numbers of footballers are, that are eligable for selection to play for FINLAND?

Well, I already agreed that Roy has a good record with mediocre teams. He stumbles with big ones. The only question is which of those England is.

Now, who can with a straight face try to claim that this man, with a saggy cross-eyed gaze of confusion, and bright pinkish red alcoholic looking skin, does not appear to be under the influence?

I think its genetic: as the Redkapps get older, all their features migrate slowly towards the centre of their face, leaving some vacant folds behind; the same is starting to happen to Jamie.

I'm massive England fan, but do you honestly think anyone else is more qualified for the job and likely to do better?

Would Redknapp take us further?

The things that seem to have stopped us from getting the best out of the players we've had over the last 15 years or so have, IMO, pandering to the players, the off-field distractions, and a lack of discipline and team ethic once out on the pitch. We've played the names instead of the team, fitting square pegs into round holes.

My biggest worry with Redknapp (who I've said in the this thread has great credentials for the job too) is that he would be as big a culprit of the above as Sven was. He loves the media, he loves the old boys and the big name players. I'm not sure he'd address what I see as the key issues (see how he's pandered to Bale wanting to play in the middle of the pitch during Spurs' decline).

As you know, I'm totally against Redknapp for off-field reasons, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason he's been set aside. One manager does seem to be much the same as another as far as England's concerned, perhaps because there's not much you can do to change the players. For that reason I am against high-profile appointments: Pearce, and many other coaches, could probably make the quarters with this team. Our record over the years does not prove that putting the "best" managers in charge works, particularly--some notable failures have been Revie and Taylor, for example, who'd been obvious choices as manager. Capello also failed, despite being a successful club manager. I'm not among those who regard Sven as a failure--he could at least always get us to the quarters; but I think we need luck to go further (as, arguably, we had in 1990), or home advantage.

I've a hunch the nation will look between its fingers at the Euros and go bananas for the Olympics.

The media guns for all of them, including Harry. It was a journo who set him up for the Monaco trap. Difficult to imagine what the papers could dig up on Roy--maybe this appointment process is corrupt. However, that didn't stop them humiliating the very respectable Graham Taylor.

Sorry, I thought you started you little rant earlier by inferring that Hodgson was such a repulsive choice because Redknapp was far superior. I took that as backing for Redknapp getting the job.

So who would you appoint if you were on the 4 man selection panel?

'FA's Harry U-turn'

Lol @ the British media never ever admitting they got something wrong. They now appear to be on a crusade to convince us all that they were right all along but some renegade FA member must have broken rank and gone back on something that had definitely been decided.......while conveniently forgetting to remind people that saggy harry has never even been contacted about the job

I've already said that I would let Pearce do the Euros. If he did well, he could be considered to stay on. If not we could have another fresh start, but we'd be stuck with Hodgson if he blows this first tournament. I'd appoint a good coach and motivator and try to de-escalate the cult of the England managership; if the FA have been doing a good job (not certain), there should be candidates for the job coming through within their system.

So first of all you'd give the job to a man who's managerial record is pretty shocking and, IMO, totally mis-handled the U21s last summer, let alone a man who's said himself that he's not really ready for the job.

Then, once he's failed, you're expecting someone from inside the FA to step up as a coach into the manager of the national team? That would take a massive cultural change within both football and wider society. Players need to have confidence in and respect for the person calling the shots. I can't see that happening within our game where club football will always be the breeding ground for national coaches (rightly or wrongly of course).
