Spacey mode-isn't it "trick" rather than "trip"?

Extended-Phenotype
Hoop Blah Agreed on the last bit.

The rest reads like a gentle acceptance that the FA never selected the team for the manager as you'd said.

Huh?

The media may have built up certain individuals to seem more worthy of a slot than reality, but I don't think that was really anything to do with managers selecting the 'golden generation' and sticking with the big names even when they failed to deliever at times.

Beckham, Lampard and Terry should never have been selected in 2006, let alone playing any part in 2008 qualifying or 2010.

What on earth was keeping them in the team if it wasn't FA pressure, the sponsor driven media and commercial appeal?

It certainly wasn't form or ability (in an England shirt, anyway).

Why wouldn't Terry and Lampard have been the right choices for 2006, or the later tournaments for that matter?

Why were they selected? Because they were our best options in those positions. Beckham was included because the manager saw him as a vital part of the team, which he was at the time. His injury probably should've meant he didn't go, but I don't think outside influences had any part to play in selection.

Edit: Beckhams injury was 2002 not 2006, he was still Sven's darling at that time though.

"trick" and "should have" (not "should of"). (Don't they teach anything in schools today?

I could care less about grammer, loosing this argument is the least of my worries. I just say, try a woman or african for once, you might win something.

Just heard 5-Live (Alan Green, Ian Payne, Shaun Custiss) discussing the ROY(al) appointment.

Apparently, he's very good at getting average players organised and performing above their ability.

Appears England do have a chance at the Euros after all.

Royal Lady As long as whoever is manager gets rid of the likes of Terry, Cole, Lampard, Rooney and Ferdinand and brings in some younger, hungrier and nicer players - I don't care who it is. If it were me, I'd choose players who proved to me that they WANTED to play for their Country, who CARED about playing and who weren't either racist or womanisers - though I realise that narrows it down somewhat! LOL.

Massively disagree with Cole being omitted. The most consistent English player we've had in the last 5 years...By a country mile. Yes he might be a bit of a nob off the field but is genuinely world class & never really puts a foot wrong for club or country (IMO).

As long as he keeps the big egos out the squad.

Roy will need players open to change and hard work. Could be exactly what we need instead of 11 players trying to be superstars. All depends if he has the strength to drop the likes of Lampard and Terry.

My comment was more an observation that we only have average players - not world class as some of the players and press would have us believe.

The only world class players we have are Rooney, Cole & potentially Hart. That's it.

I'm not convinced about Rooney.

He's special when he wants, but his temperament is special needs

Oh completely. He is an absolute moron when playing for England. At least he cares I suppose which is more than can be said of most of them. Got to be honest - I really don't care about England these days! Wish Roy all the best though.

I've thought for years if you banned all PL players from the England set up you'd have a much better team. No egos just all busting a gut for their country. No one would have the balls to do it though!

It doesn't help that they all kept getting called Englands 'Golden Generation' when really they've won nothing and are just a bunch of egos who can not play together!

Hopefully the media will shut up with all that nonsense now. We all know its completely untrue!

We were actually relatively successful under SGE when you see what's happened since. Hard to believe that Sinclair & Butt were regular starters in 2002!

Yeah, understated players and teams can always do so well, and often do (just look at reading and newcastle in the leagues). The media are always winning though - they pile on pressure and then make it worse when the players crumble under it

Hopefully Woy won't crumble to media pressure & will pick a young team for the future. Massive clear out needed. We should use the Euros just to try a few things out.

Rooney - I'll give you that one on the basis he is usually a moron for England.

If you actually READ my post I said potentially Hart - lets face it he will keep that shirt for 10 years barring injuries or a serious loss of form.

As for Cole well that's where you lose any credibility. Phenomenal player.
