Manchester United are considering a stunning £10million swoop for Swansea’s on-loan Icelandic star Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been monitoring the midfielder, who is enjoying an outstanding campaign at the Liberty Stadium after arriving from German club Hoffenheim in January.

United assistant Mike Phelan was sent to the Reebok Stadium last week to watch Swansea, with the champions set to face Brendan Rodgers’ side next weekend.

And he was accompanied by Martin Ferguson, the brother of United’s boss and the club’s chief scout.

His brief was to run the rule over Sigurdsson – an Icelandic international – and he was impressed with what he saw.

United are looking for midfield recruits after being forced to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement in January because of a lack of quality and injuries.

Sigurdsson, a clean striker of the ball, has scored seven times in 14 appearances for the Swans.

He also enjoyed a healthy strike-rate of 18 goals in 42 appearances during two years with Reading before moving to Hoffenheim for £7m in 2010.

The German club value Sigurdsson at £10m – but they may look to squeeze more money out of United if the champions firm up their interest.

Whelan and Fergie were both at the Swansea game today. I don't think his all round game is good enough for the top 4 yet. His defensive work-rate is poor (he doesn't track back very well) which is why I think he's more suited to Arsenal than Man United. Of course if Rogers moves to Tottenham, he will be strongly linked with a move there. Hoffenheim will try and keep him now as well. It would be remarkable if he did come home but in all honesty I think we're 4 months too late.

I don't get this rumour, but apparently Church playing, increases the chance of Gylfi signing? Not sure how that works tbh.

If Gylfi hadn't gone to Swansea we could've probably had him for £4-£5m with no competition :(

I hate fcuking Swansea

Nah, all McDermott's fault.

McDermott out, sack the board.

They can buy him and loan to us for the season.

http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/Swansea-City-believe-Gylfi-Sigurdsson-sign/story-15968488-detail/story.html
SWANSEA City are increasingly optimistic that they will win the race to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson in a club-record deal.

Brendan Rodgers has made it clear to chairman Huw Jenkins that he wants Sigurdsson to be part of his squad next season after his spectacular Liberty loan spell.

And though a host of clubs are reportedly interested in the midfielder, Swansea now feel they are favourites to tie up a permanent move which is likely to be worth around £5 million.

Sigurdsson revealed over the weekend that he wants to play Premier League football next season and has told parent-club Hoffenheim that he does not want to go back to the Bundesliga.

And the suggestion is that even though there are other clubs reportedly keeping tabs on the situation, Sigurdsson is keen on extending his stay at Swansea.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle are among those who have been touted as Sigurdsson suitors.

But the 22-year-old has thrived at Swansea under Rodgers, the manager who gave him a first-team chance at Reading and has now given him the opportunity to shine in the top flight.

Swansea will not be able to compete financially should one of the English game's big guns bid for Sigurdsson this summer.

However, Sigurdsson knows he will be given the chance to continue building his reputation through regular first-team football should he end up signing a permanent contract at the Liberty Stadium.

Sigurdsson has been a regular ever since he arrived on loan for the rest of this season back in January, and has looked happy as the attacking prong in Swansea's midfield three.

He has given Rodgers's team a new dimension in the final third, scoring seven goals in 17 appearances while racking up the assists.

Sigurdsson would become Swansea's record signing, with the fee certain to eclipse the £3.5 million they splashed on Danny Graham last summer.

But the club are aware that they will have to spend a significant amount of money on bolstering their squad if they are to compete in the top flight once more next season.

Rodgers met with Jenkins last week to discuss transfer policy and declared himself happy with what he heard.

I'd agree. At best Hoffenheim will sell him at break even. My guess is that would be £7m as a minimum taking into account any sell on fee to us. Probably even more than that TBH.
