Franchise FC
sandman Maybe he can wave his Champions League winners Medal, six Premier League medals, two FA Cup medals and his La Liga Winners medal at the ref while he's at it.

How lucky can one man be ?

To play for that lot and have so many others carry him to those medals

He won the MLS last season as well.

Big Ern I think we have a better chance at the Euro's now that Roy is in charge. Let just look at the tactics of Harry and Roy

Harry: Lets his coaches do all the technical stuff, but allows players to generally do what they want on the pitch. According to Harry it is "10% Tactics and 90% the players." No wonder the players love him as they can go out there and do what they want trying to be superstars, the result seem secondary. There are only a 3 or 4 Internatioanl teams in the World that can play open football, giving players freedon, and still win, and England are not one of them. We would get slaughtered the moment we faced a decent team under Harry.

Roy: Uses the zonal marking system with a rigid 442. Each player knows there job as it is drilled into them. There is no "Do What You Want" which attracts the players to Harry, but a more cautious approach with Full Backs knowing when to push up and when to stay. 2 protective Midfielders that know when to burst forward and either a level front 2 or a horizontal front 2. This approach may not be as pleasing to the eye, but it gave Greece success in the Euros, and to some extend when Spain won the World Cup, scoring 8 goals in 7 games.

All in all, I still think are chances are very slim, but as we showed against Spain recently, we can beat anyone on our day and a consistant approach in terms of tactics and diacipline will help us achieve that. Harry's approach, like Keagans, would have been a disaster.

I'll get behind Roy, but a 4 year contract? Why do the FA do his every time? Its not my money and effects me in no way whatsoever, so im very far from outraged, but it just makes them look very stupid.

Ok so this is from someone far more ITK than me (former senior exec at the FA).

The FA were never going to employee Redknapp. They are too concerned about there being more skeletons in that financial closet of his.

So as much as the media may have wanted it, simply not going to happen. Hence no contact, and no interview.

End of story.

Hodgson's a decent guy, and handled the way he was treated at Liverpool with a hell of a lot of dignity. He deserves a chance and I hope he gets it.

The iron pyrite generation have proved themselves to be utterly mediorce at tournaments. If nothing else Hodgson has proved himself able to give mediocre teams the shape and tactics that make them effective and hard to beat. If we had a team capable of playing like Barcelona then he probably wouldn't be a good choice but we haven't. I hope he does well then, like they did with Bobby Robson after '90, the media will suddenly decide he's the best manager ever.

hmm as an outsider looking in, does ask alot of questions..

has a manager ever left a nation after getting it qualified but before the actual competition? very strange
whats the best you can expect with roy ? if roy's england crashes out of euros without scoring goal or getting a single point in group stages, will he be able to handle the pressure? theres alot of unknowns out there.. but ive always said the problem isnt managers its the players. the fa itself is the problem. making england manager the fall guy time and time again and getting further from winning a trophy isn't progress IMO.

Yes, Roy Hodgson for one!

I expect us to start to build a team and a pattern of play. I expect Hodgson to do that with or without the 'superstars' who have failed to take their club form on to the national stage.

I don't expect us to win tournaments, but I do expect us to look like a team with a plan and to be competitive. If we do that we have an outside chance of being successful at a tournament and maybe even win one.

I want to see us play half decent football, select players who are both in form but part of a long term plan to develop a team as opposed to throwing together individuals every now and again.

I think Hodgson is a decent choice to do that.

Interesting stuff.

I'm not surprised if they were put off by Redknapps potential skeletons, and rightly so. What we need is a consistent and stable pair of hands to get the best out of the new generation.

I'm not sure I saw Redknapp as that, despite his management strengths potentially being quite applicable to the international scene, so I can't believe the bigwigs at the FA would've done. The last thing they'd have wanted is for another appointment to go tits up in scandal and the media be all over them for another shambles.

My only concern over Hodgson is how the players, media (and also a fair proportion of fans) will react to the appointment and how much of a chance he'll get. If he doesn't get the backing a new manager deserves then he could be on to another hiding to nothing.

Good post, Ern.

For what it's worth our chances always have, and will be, slim no matter how the media hype us up.
However, if Greece can win it, we can.......................

Fair play, if true, to Harry's wife.

Not being able to win the highly criticised, dubiously nominated and selected World Player of The Year award of which only people in Europe are ever chosen?

Congrats. Maybe he can wave his runner-up trophy at the ref next time he spoons a penalty.

He couldn't keep up with the referee unburdened, let alone carrying the cabinet of the clubs he's been franchised to play for.

Really pleased we've swerved Harry and all that comes with him. Cannot stand the bloke.

Hodgson should probably have been England manager at some point or other so i'm happy enough with that. Don't think it's a great time to take over in terms of personnel (just about seen the last of the previous generation, not quite seeing the best of the next one) but I hope it all goes well for him.

The newspapers are an actual disgrace.

soggy biscuit Bored of this Harry Refknapp press conference, when does the Hodgson one start?

I hate the media over here. Mongdivs.

Saw this in a lobby last night. What an abortion of a press conference that was. All they were interested in was Redknapp, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he's a grade A pcunt.

Maguire The newspapers are an actual disgrace.

The Times wrote a scathing article on Monday about Hodgson, or moreover the FA’s failure to appoint ‘the man everyone wanted’. As you say, disgraceful.
